The year 2021 is ending on a high note for Indian Sports. The athletes did a great show at Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. It started in April when Indian grapplers clinched 14 medals in the Senior Asian Wrestling Championship and ended with seven medals in the Asian Archery Championships. The shooters were also impressed by winning 43 medals in the ISSF Junior World Championship in October while wrestler Anshu Malik became the 1st Indian woman to win the World Championships silver medal.

Focus more on individual sports
Through the Sports Champ platform, we get connected to several schools across India. As a part of sports education, we organise many seminars, workshops and counselling sessions for principals, teachers, parents and students. It was very surprising to know that most of the schools were unaware of what they are exactly required to bring a sports culture. The majority of them had infrastructure and facilities and coaching for team sports like football and basketball. The kids irrespective of their inclinations, physic and passion were forced to opt for the limited options the school provide.

The Sports Champ magazine has always promoted and encouraged girls’ participation in sports. Even though the situation has changed a lot in the last few decades, there is much more to improve. The parents still hesitate to send their daughters to sports, especially some male-dominated sports like football. But the hosting of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Goa will change the scenario. As Bhaichung Bhutia, former captain of the Indian football team has rightly said, this tournament can create a lot of icons and awareness for girls and would encourage a lot of parents to allow their daughters to play football.

SPORTS CHAMP AUGUST 2022 EDITION IS FILLED WITH OUR INDIAN HEROES LIFE JOURNEY - ACHIEVEMENTS AND ACCOLADES.

It is believed that chess originated in India, and in the last few decades, chess in India saw a qualitative and quantitative rise. As of now, we have 74 Grandmasters (GM), 125 International Masters (IM), 18 Woman Grandmasters (WGM) and 42 Woman International Masters. We are among the top 10 in the world and our players have won joint gold in the 2020 Chess Olympiad and a bronze next year. Now, for the first time, India has got an opportunity to host the Chess Olympiad. While Chennai is gearing up for the mega event, starting from July 28, the Indian legend GM Viswanathan Anand is also likely to become the Depute President of FIDE, the International Chess Federation. With these steps, we can surely say that we are marching towards becoming a ‘Chess Super Power’.

It was not an easy task to continue going when everything was shut down during the Corona Pandemic. but we had confidence in our readers and decided to keep pushing and yet delivering our best. And now it’s high time to open the wings and find new horizons.

Let’s promote Indian Sports
Wrestling is the traditional sport of India and though the Indian wrestlers are doing a good job at the international level, the more popular version of the sport in India is mud wrestling or akhara. Especially in the states like Maharashtra, this traditional version attracts thousands of spectators.  

New content, new series
The Sports Champ group has always provided all-around sports education to its readers. Whether it’s a print magazine or our online talk show, now and then we have come up with new fresh content. We have now introduced a new series on international sports brands. The first guest is Dan Tigau, the founder, and CEO of Revolution 3.0 from Romania, who spoke about various aspects of table tennis.

Kudos to para-athletes

First, congratulations to all Padma Awardees of 2022. It’s a positive sign that four Paralympic medallists including multiple medallist javelin thrower, Devendra Jhajharia, Tokyo Paralympics double medallist shooter Avani Lekhara, gold medallist javelin thrower Sumit Antil and gold-winning para-shuttler Pramod Bhagat are among the nine sportspersons who are conferred with the Padma awards. Through our magazine, we have always promoted the para-athletes and it can be gauged from the fact we have already covered all these athletes in our previous editions.

Dear readers, wish you a happy and prosperous new year. Like every year, Sports champ is bringing you a new layout and amazing content and hoping you will like our thought, which we tried our best.

The year 2021 has turned out to be special for the Indian sports community. In the Tokyo Olympics, the Indian athletes returned with gold, two silver, and four bronze medals. The para-athletes raised the bar higher and with 19 medals, including five gold, the Indian contingent signed off with 24th in the overall tally - the highest ever

The Sports Champ magazine, which is India’s first sports education magazine is now quite popular and is praised by many. However, our ventures are not just limited to a monthly magazine. Along with the strong reading content, we have come up with an exclusive series of Sports Champ Talk Show, in which imminent sports personalities interacted with us. It was a huge success as the number of viewers kept increasing. With this motivation, we started two unique talk show series. ‘The Indian Table Tennis Heroes’ where we interact with our past and present greatest paddlers. It is super amazing to know their inspirational life journey which is guiding and inspiring many current and upcoming table tennis players of our country. The second series covers principals of various schools in India, which promote sports.  

The Tokyo Olympics turned out to be the best-ever for the Indian contingent. The whole country was delighted and celebrated the success of our Olympic heroes. The gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, is constantly busy in various programmes and felicitations and interviews. This is actually a positive sign that apart from cricket, other sportsmen are in the limelight.

It has been observed that, unlike the Olympic Games which makes it into the global spotlight, the coverage for the Paralympics is limited. Very few follow and cheer for the para-athletes. Despite their heroic efforts, the para-athletes don’t get the attention, motivation, and encouragement they actually deserve.

The wait is over and the Tokyo Olympics will begin on July 23. To celebrate the mega event, we have brought you the Olympics Special Edition. We have covered every angle, right from athletes, coaches to sponsors and volunteers of this global sports extravaganza.

With the Covid-19 pandemic again raging across India, it is threatening to disrupt the preparations of India’s Olympic contenders. A few athletes have suffered from the virus and preparatory camps and tournaments are being rescheduled. It’s definitely a setback for them but let’s think positive and hopefully, they will overcome everything next month.

In this issue, we have covered some of the emerging Indian athletes are known for their fighting spirit. Bhawna Jat, a wonder girl from a remote village Kabra in Rajasthan is a perfect example. The girl who used to go for cattle grazing has shown her hidden talent and has qualified for the Olympic Games in the event of 20 kilometres. Interestingly this will be her debut at the international level and considering the timings that she recorded during the last 4-5 months, the experts feel that she has a bright chance of a podium finish.

Pwilao Basumatary, a youth boxer from Assam shares a similar story. Right from her childhood, Pwilao faced several adversities, yet she overcame all to become an international star. She aims to grab the World Championship title and says she learnt to fight for everything from her childhood.

In our cover story segment, read about Ganemat Sekhon, who created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a medal in the senior World Cup. The 20-year-old skeet shooter speaks about her journey and the memorable final round.

It’s so good to be back. The grounds are once again buzzing with athletes and our ace players are doing their best at the international level.
Indian youth boxers recently dominated at Adriatic Pearl Competition and returned with 12 medals, including five from our women pugilists in Budva, Montenegro. Asian Junior Champion Alfiya Pathan was a player to watch in this tournament. The Nagpur girl spent the lockdown training with her elder brother and came back strongly to win a gold medal.
