The big fat Indian Wedding just got bigger!

In the last two months of 2022 alone, 3.75 lakh crore INR (an approximate 46bn USD) were spent on weddings. And according to a report, this figure was expected to reach 159 billion dollars or 13 lakh crore INR) in the first six months of 2023.

Around 32 lakh weddings took place between November ‘22 and February ‘23. Indians love weddings, making for a billion-dollar wedding services industry! And even if weddings have a smaller guest list post Covid, the money being spent has increased. 

For Salons, Bridal business encompasses the groom, the family and friends too.  Months of prep and trials are done in salons before the actual wedding comes around! In fact, the revenue potential of the wedding season is so big that several exclusive Bridal Studios have sprung up which go beyond the hair, make-up, beauty and nail services, to offer also advanced aesthetic treatments for the skin, hair and body.

2023 - The Year the Was! 
As 2023 ends, it is time to see what created waves in the beauty industry this year! 
The Indian beauty market became the 4th largest in the world in 2023 at $1.35bn and is projected to grow to $2.27bn by 2027 (industry sources). This growth is evident in the rapid rise in the consumption of beauty products as well as services. The beauty boom attracted two major corporates Tata and Reliance to enter the beauty segment with both online and as retail stores - Tata Cliq and Tira. With Shopper’s Stop launching SS Beauty, Nykaa ruling online, and so many other options to choose from, the Indian consumer is really spoilt for choice! 
Riding this growth wave, the industry too shared their ambitious plans and growth targets. L’Oreal India aims to become a $1bn business in 3-4 years, while HUL predicts that beauty and personal care will be their key growth drivers till 2028.  
India is growing in importance not just as a beauty market, but also as a resource for natural ingredients, for research, and for manufacturing! Home-grown Indian beauty brands are getting noticed, and recently, Honasa, listed on the NY Stock exchange, following the listing of beauty retailer Nykaa a couple of years ago, signaling a new era for ‘Made in India Cosmetics’. 
As we close the year, we also remember the big industry milestones. Toni & Guy celebrated their 60th  this year, Wella Professionals became the #1 salon colour brand in the world, Schwarzkopf Professional became the 2nd fastest growing hair care brand in India, and StyleSpeak turned 21!

Coming of Age @21

There is a sense of great achievement and delight when one finally turns 21! 

Today I am so happy and proud that StyleSpeak – our ‘home grown’, made-in-India magazine has turned 21 this month. And that our effort and commitment to create a specialized magazine for this industry has succeeded!

Whether launching a magazine or a business - achieving this big first milestone makes all the years of ups and downs, the challenge of building of the brand, brick by brick absolutely worth it! 

I started publishing StyleSpeak, a specialized magazine for the beauty professionals and services providers in India in 2002.  It was a natural corollary to the IMAGE - first Beauty Show in India that was organized by us from 1997 onwards where we had the entire beauty industry come together in an exhibition, conference, hair shows, competitions and seminars.   

Back in 2002 the service industry was just about getting started and international brands were looking towards India with anticipation and hope of exploiting the billion-consumer market. At that time StyleSpeak’s goal of supporting the industry with the latest industry information on products, trends, education helped the industry grow. And as the industry grew, so did we! 

We are today so fortunate for the wonderful, strong friendships we have made in this industry!  They have supported us as strongly as we have supported them, and for that I am grateful! 

As I look forward to years and years of friendship and collaboration, a big ‘Thank You ‘to all our industry friends!

HBS - Inspiring the Inspirers

Inspiring creativity in already creative professionals is a tall ask! To do it as ‘the Face’ of the HBS show which is filled with thousands of creative people, is even more challenging. But it’s a project each HBS Creative Team looks forward to with great anticipation and excitement. 

Every year, the StyleSpeak team gets into a huddle to decide the artistes on the Creative Team creating the ‘Face’ of the upcoming HBS Show. Our belief in the amazing talent and creativity amongst our hairdressers, make-up artistes has always been proven - evident in the 5 amazing looks we have created in the 5 editions of the StyleSpeak HBS Show held so far.   

The ‘FACE of HBS’ must spell DRAMA, FASHION and ELAGANCE. It must shout CREATIVITY, but at the same time must INSPIRE the viewer to believe they can do it too! The HBS 2024 Face has the Retro stylish look of the 60’s. It blends style with elegance, while at the same time being inspired by fashion forward, Avant-garde cool.

Skinification in Vogue!
 
‘Skinification’ has become the latest ‘in trend’ word of late! For some time now, consumers have been looking for skincare - like benefits in their hair or make-up products.  But, what does that mean?
 
Basically, consumers are looking for more ‘care’ in their hair or make-up products. More scalp-to -tips care that is deeply hydrating, moisturizing and even repairing for hair. In make-up, it would mean the inclusion of actives which offer sun protection, or deep hydration, or even those that fade pigmentation.
 
So, how about skinification of skin? Well, the idea is just the same - higher performing skincare, more result oriented, and giving faster results! More consumers than ever before are looking for these qualities in their skincare products as well as their therapists in salons. However, if these are found wanting, they don’t hesitate to turn to medical clinics / cosmetologists for solutions.

Use Technology to Transform Your Salon Business
At a time when the world is embracing technology in almost all walks of life, Salons and Spas must keep pace. 
As technology facilitates and enables easier and smoother ways of doing tasks, it has increasingly become a part of our daily life. In the salon too, tools and gadgets used by the hairdressers and beauty therapists have become more efficient, intuitive and eco-friendly.   
Some of the unique customer friendly tech that salons can use include some initiatives I have come across lately. An AI Mirror in the salon reception which invites customers to scan your face, present a diagnosis and suggest possible treatments was one; another was the new launch of a Hair Colour App which scans the clients’ hair, analyses it, and offers virtual hair colour options to choose from.
Other new tech that is increasingly in use are eco-friendly measures for the salon e.g. enabling lower consumption of water in the backwash and power consumed in the lighting too. 
Reaching out to your customers whether new or existing, is important. Your salon website could incorporate an AI assistant who is prepped to answer frequently asked questions especially by new clients. On the other hand, existing clients could avail of online web-cam consultations – a time and space saving initiative.

Today salons are equally populated by men and women alike competing for services like waxing which was earlier the lady’s domain.  And what’s more, they are spending more. 
Men are happily stepping into unisex salons today which have a new age or an industrial look. Have a special ‘male only’ menu at hand with appropriately named treatments. Men are uncomfortable with ‘feminine’ lingo, and you have to find ways to wrap a quintessentially feminine product in masculine hues.
