Many are of the view that India should keep its target big so that it can achieve bigger. In a country where 60% of the population is young and the middle class population is burgeoning, there is enough space for anyone to think big and also to achieve big targets.
When 2019 ended with a grim air, many declared that the year witnessed slow growth and the market failed to excite many. But a closer examination proved it all wrong; brands flocked to the Indian market. German footwear brand BIRKENSTOCK–with origins dating back to the late 18th century — has entered the Indian market, starting with sale of its popular sandals online before opening a store. Leayan Global has roped in Vicky Kaushal, Bollywood actor, as the brand ambassador for its leading leather footwear brand Red Chief. These are a few from a long list.
The industry is certainly going to see lots of action. What does this mean for the second largest footwear producer? Today India’s footwear production accounts for approximately 9 per cent of the global annual production of 22 billion pairs. It is expected to grow further. Given some of the measures introduced by the government in the face of slowdown, every stakeholder has the valid reason to be optimistic.

Adidas is going to shut its Ansbach and Atlanta Speedfactories with the aim to deploy the technology at Asian suppliers soon. The company expects this to result in better utilization of existing production capacity and more flexibility in product design. If it has disappointed a lot, the release by Wolverine World Wide did just the opposite.
It announced that its third-quarter earnings topped estimates. In its financial report for the period ended Sept. 28, the footwear manufacturer logged adjusted diluted earnings per share that climbed 9.7% to 68 cents, 6 cents above Wall Street estimates. Revenues rose 2.8% to $574.3 million, roughly in line with consensus bets of $574.5 million.

At the macro levels the signs are gloomy and the effects of structural changes to trickle down is likely to take time. But right below, things
are happening. For instance, to celebrate womanhood sport brand Puma has unveiled its new campaign titled Propah Lady. The campaign counters the conventional idea of what makes women proper and redefines it. On another front, Austrian fibre producer Lenzing Group announced plans to enter the footwear segment in India, introducing Tencel for Footwear. It’s important since it is known for its unique and globally acclaimed concept of the botanic shoe or sustainable options in footwear. The launch comes at a time when the Indian government has committed to ending the use of single-use plastic in the coming years. It’s not in footwear alone, the watch segment also witnessed the entry
of Swiss brand Hublot. It launched a flagship boutique in Mumbai, its first standalone store in the market. These are the signs indicating that everything is vibrant and it won’t take much time for the economy to bounce back.

n the footwear arena, we witnessed some major developments. Bata has announced that it is planning to open about 500 franchise stores across the country. Its CEO was quoted saying that the company is eyeing 150 franchise stores in single-store towns. A finding suggests that technological advancement in athletic footwear industry enabled the companies to manufacture quality products with an objective to fulfill the growing requirement of consumers, and companies are also focusing on adopting 3-D printing technology with an objective to produce quality shoes in less time. The increasing demand for comfortable and fashionable footwear among all age groups, followed by increasing participation in sports activities, is driving the growth of this market, suggests the finding.
Despite the gloom and the weak numbers, there is much for everybody to look forward to. The general understanding is that the slowdown will remain, but it won’t be here for long. It is hoped that the economy will bounce back and we will witness more actions.

While this has captured the global attention, all seems not to be well back home. Many industry stakeholders were not satisfied with the budget, and they insist more should be done to overcome some of the concerns they have been exposed. During the last few months, we witnessed the launch of several collections. If a writer has his magnum opus executed in lengthy solitude, then what
a painter delivers is his executed work created with mastered strokes. In the context of such artistic execution, what we often see as the launch of fashion collection represents the same combination of all the hard-earned and distilled elements. Observing each collection through such a lens is essential as it only elevates the benchmark with which we judge them.

Once the space of online shopping was confined to some corner of an e-mail service provider’s platform. It was also the time when shopping malls began to sprout across the major cities in India. Their footprint, however, wasn’t as widespread as those in other developing nations. As a result, despite their presence, malls and supermarkets in most cities still remained not easily accessible. What was more interesting was that the Indian middle class population was growing and they were endowed with something unprecedented, greater disposable income. Today,
quite a lot of them have become well-wheeled and whose taste has diversified.

During the recent weeks a lot of major developments have dominated
the India’s retail market. Until a few years back, the prevalent understanding among the major players was that online was the elephant in the room, and what made the difference was that it really gave everyone a fright. But the dust has finally settled and what has emerged, apparently, is that online has definitely as well as visibly disrupted the retail landscape, but its share hasn’t even crossed 3%, and 16% is the biggest futuristic number major studies have highlighted. The seeming possibility that it could topple or run over the established players has now virtually gone. The truth of the matter is, many came, shone and quite a lot of them simply disappeared.


What is logical to maintain is, the landscape remains vibrant as ever and the ecosystem is unarguably healthy, meaning it’s for everyone. But what will warrant the survival as well as success of a stakeholder depends on how keen as observer it is and if it is willing to introduce ingenious strategy, rather than following the madding crowds.

The dust has somewhat settled, yet the confusion lingers and it will continue to do so. Several months after GST was introduced, the industry is still dealing with it. So the success or the successful implementation of the new tax reform remains to be seen.

This being one main reason, apart from the lingering impact of demonetization, the economy has finally emerged visibly scathed. The fact that economic growth is expected to slow down doesn’t bore well. This has come at a time when China, after having enjoyed continuous outstanding growth, has recently announced realistically that it won’t aim double-digit growth. The neighbouring giant has achieved economic miracle while ensuring that the consistency growth was maintained. Unfortunately, the Indian story has been rather disappointing this time. What most thought would fix some of the issues has not been done, and it is likely, much to our dismay, that it will take more time.

Whether it has adversely affected or has created a rampant confusion, the simple and general ambition remains the same: growth. This is reflected in the sincere and hard attempts the industry has witnessed in the recent time as well as in what it has been planning to accomplish. One such fine instance is Meet at Agra fair. Despite the bleak atmosphere in the industry, every stakeholder Shoes & Accessories has spoken to or interacted with expressed visible optimism. Confused though by the new tax reform, many industry leaders see it as something that will benefit the economy in the long run, and for it they are willing to bear the short term pain. Similarly, brands like Wooba’s and ID’s optimism only reinvigorates that new ideas can actually foster. 

Weighing the determination and optimism, there is so much the industry has to look forward to. It won’t be any exaggeration to conclude that the industry is set to sail through the choppy waters, and all will emerge stronger and, of course, better experienced.

In continuation from the report carried in our Aug issue on Omni channels by Knight Frank, in this issue we bring you the case studies. Since it’s a given fact that going forward, as lifestyles become fastpaced, to gain the consumers’ attention it would be imperative for brands to reach out to the customer through a host of channels. Omnichannel retail is an evolving concept, regards to the sales pitch that they give to the companies, adopting Omni-channel strategies and need to invest in people who are hardworking and smart so that they are adept at execution, would be of utmost priority. Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2017 held in Mumbai from August 16-20 with 93 designers at the St Regis was an exciting event with garments, jewellery, shoes, bags and accessories making a strong fashion statement. On top of the charts were shoes, which designers created to match their collections. Handbags too got attention and so did jewellery, which was opulent as well as colourful.
