On 1st January, we welcome a New Year according to Gregorian calendar and with it bring hope of a better time and improved life in the coming days. But for some, the story remains unchanged as the New Year is just another change of date. Talking about the world of law, we saw some beneficial legislations materialise, many new proposals of bringing India at par with the developed countries of the world and at the same time stagnation of some age-old issues that need to be addressed and laws stuck in the political whirlpool. The year ended with a positive note for ‘women empowerment’ as the much discussed provision of treating juveniles as adults in heinous crimes finally became law of the land and other women centric issues like surrogacy, legal guardianship, marital rape etc. dominated the discussions in politico-legal circles. The cover story on the occasion of New Year 2016 by Sonali Kusum, a PhD Research Scholar at NLSIU Bangalore, brings to you a glimpse of women oriented laws which may come in force in the coming year.
