Housing Checks Into Infra

​After years of industry lobbying, this year's Budget has finally granted infra status to the affordable housing industry, giving the segment a big boost. But infra financing models, like the ​much-touted ​Hybrid Annuity Model​,​ ha​ve
 not really taken off. So what lies ahead for infra finance?


The budgetary support for the infrastructure industry to the tune of Rs 4 lakh crore was announced by Union finance minister Arun Jaitley on Feb 1, 2017.

Infrastructure Today made an honest effort to seek expectations from the budget that infra industry leaders had from the Union budget for the 2017-2018 fiscal. Post budget, the same stakeholders were asked to assess whether their expectations had been met or not.

A news feature on future proofed airports in India, including an interview with the Airports Authority of India chairperson, Guruprasad Mohapatra as well as a news focus on the coal and mining sector were also suitably addressed in the Feb issue of IT.

The new year - 2017 - has ushered in a mixed bag of hopes and worries for the infrastructure sector. Demonetisation held up cash based operations of toll projects that came to a grinding a halt. PM Modi is pushing capital and bonds markets to provide long term finance for infra projects. The tax rates applicable for these financial markets are likely to be revised upwards to generate infra financing. The impact of the proposed uniform Goods and Services Tax (GST) across India will result in the warehousing and logistics industry re-calibrating and literally needing to transform to a mega-warehousing culture. Currently, Indian companies are compelled to maintain warehouses in as many states as they do business in, to avoid paying variable rates of taxes as prevalent in individual states.
