He gave up his throne and accepted fourteen years of exile to honor his father's pledge. His wife Sita and brother Lakshmana are so devoted that they choose to go with him to live in the forest. There, Sita is abducted by the demon Ravana and taken to his island kingdom Lanka. Grief-stricken Rama, wandering in search of Sita, receives help from the vulture Jatayu and ape leader Hanuman. Hanuman and his troops take Rama and Lakshmana across the ocean into Ravana's Lanka. In the war that follows, the demons are destroyed. Rama reunited with Sita makes over Lanka to Ravana's brother and returns to rule Ayodhya. The epic poem 'Ramayana' describes Rama's story in the ancient language Sanskrit.
