DARI belantara Mane, Pidie, wartawan Yuswardi A. Suud bersama fotografer Heri Juanda menjemput satu kisah yang tersaji di halaman sampul majalah The Atjeh. Laksana sa- habat lama, Yuswardi dan Heri, menunggang gajah mengelil- ingi rimba.
Pulang dari sana medio November 2013, mereka masuk ke rimba riset di dunia maya dan berbagai buku. Terurailah kisah tentang rakyat Aceh yang bersahabat dengan gajah. Persahabatan itu begitu akrabnya sehingga ditabalkanlah nama terhormat untuk gajah, yaitu Po Meurah dan dipakai sebagai kendaraan Sultan Aceh.
Sekarang, gajah-gajah itu dianggap pengganggu.

CINTA itu ibarat seekor kupu-kupu yang indah dan sulit disentuh. Namun keindahannya mampu menjadikan sebuah taman yang menenangkan. Menyitir pepatah bijak tersebut, rasanya tepat menjadi pembuka kalimat dalam tulisan ini. Seperti kami yang mencoba terus menyajikan keindahan baru dalam setiap tulisan di majalah ini.

Mengawali edisi kelima ini, kami mengangkat kembali napak tilas etnis Tionghoa di Aceh sejak era kerajaan. Hadir di Aceh sejak mengenal pelayaran, pedagang-pedagang Tionghoa berhasil menguasai Selat Malaka sekaligus menjadi negara sahabat pertama bagi kerajaan di Aceh. Adalah Lamuri, Samudera Pasai, Po-Li, dan Kerajaan Aceh Darussalam yang pernah menenggak manisnya hubungan diplomasi dengan China pada masa kejayaannya.

Eksistensi warga Tionghoa dalam catatan sejarah Aceh ini menjadi daya pikat tersendiri bagi redaksi The Atjeh untuk menyajikannya sebagai tulisan utama. Ulasan lengkapnya ada di halaman 81.

Kami juga menyorot pesona Willem III Toren, sebuah mercusuar yang dibuat Belanda di Pulo Aceh. Mercusuar ini menjadi salah satu lokasi strategis untuk memantau daratan Aceh, Samudera Hindia, dan Selat Malaka. Bangunan ini sekaligus menjadi saksi sejarah penyerangan pasukan Aceh terhadap Belanda di bawah pimpinan Teungku Chik Di Tiro saat peperangan tempo dulu. Kami tuliskan untuk Anda di halaman 33.

Dari Aceh Besar kami menyajikan pesona geurumbang yang menjadi daya tarik Pantai Lhok Mee di Lamreh. Simak ceritanya di halaman 71 tentang keunikan pohon yang mampu bertahan hidup di air laut yang mengandung kadar garam sangat tinggi. Masih dari Aceh Besar kami juga menuliskan tentang Sisi Lain Lampuuk di halaman 50.
Sepotong romantisme kegigihan para perempuan di Gayo yang berperan melambungkan nama kopi Gayo, kami sajikan dalam tajuk Romantika di Amor di halaman 15. Jangan lewatkan juga tulisan menarik lainnya yang menjadi pelengkap ‘amunisi’ The Atjeh edisi kali ini.

Di akhir tulisan, saya kembali menyitir pepatah bijak: Dalam kerendahan hati ada ketinggian budi, dalam kemiskinan harta ada kekayaan jiwa, dan dalam kesempitan hidup ada kekuasaan ilmu. Selamat membaca!

MENGAWALI 2014 ini kami memulainya dengan mendaki Gunung Seulawah. Di sana terbentang kerusakan Taman Hutan Raya yang berada kaki Gunung Seulawah, padahal inilah benteng terakhir pencegahan banjir kiriman ke ibu kota Provinsi Aceh.
Penyebabnya apalagi jika bukan perambahan hutan. Tim liputan The Atjeh pun menyusuri Lembah Seulawah untuk melihat kondisi hutan dari dekat. Hasilnya seperti yang tersaji di The Atjeh edisi ini di halaman 32.
Selain itu, kami juga menyeberang ke Pulau Aceh untuk memotret keseharian Max si “Pemburu Gurita”. Max satu dari sepuluh warga di desanya yang masih setia pada laut. Max cuma mengandalkan kekuatan paru-parunya saat berada di kedalaman laut. Simak cerita Max yang melakoni profesinya hanya bersenjatakan gancu dan pemanah ikan rakitan di halaman 56.
Dari Aceh Utara, kami menemukan jejak Istana Pasai. Banyak cerita yang terkubur bersama Istana Pasai ini, di antaranya tentang kerajaan yang pernah dipimpin oleh seorang ratu. Juga soal otonomi khusus yang sudah mulai dikenal di sini. Pasai sebagai pemilik otonomi khusus dari Kerajaan Majapahit dapat mengatur hubungan dagang dengan pengusaha asing. Tentu saja cerita ini sangat menarik dan kami sajikan sebagai cerita sampul The Atjeh untuk edisi ke-4 ini.
Dari Banda Aceh ada Taman Ghairah yang dibangun Sultan Iskandar Muda sebagai lambang cinta untuk permaisurinya. Taman itu juga menjadi tempat putri mandi. Jangan coba-coba mengintip karena bisa dipancung. Simak ceritanya di halaman 70.
Taman Ghairah tiada lain adalah Taman Putroe Phang. Sebuah taman yang memesona hingga kini. Penuh warna-warni bunga yang semerbak. Indahnya menawan laksana bungong Seulanga yang ceritanya kami tuliskan untuk Anda di halaman 108. Seulanga mengangkat cerita tentang bunga yang memiliki peranan penting dalam ranah sosiokultur masyarakat Aceh.
