2021 is a significant milestone in the history of the SPCA as we celebrate our centenary. Established in 1921, the SPCA has been promoting the humane treatment of animals, protecting them from cruelty and abuse, and providing various community education programmes to cultivate a deeper respect for life for the past 100 years. This issue of Pawprint covers short stories about our long-serving employees, consultant and volunteer from different departments, as well as interviews with various staff members and mongrel owners.

More than 60 Inclusive Parks for Pets opened in various districts in April, bringing the total number of such parks to over 100. After a decade of research and lobbying effort, the SPCA is delighted to see that Hong Kong has finally moved a step closer to becoming an animal friendly city, where park users with or without pets can enjoy park facilities together in an inclusive environment. We are would like to humbly share our lobbying journey with you.

The pandemic has resulted in a shortage of veterinarians and frontline staff at the SPCA. The number of visitors to our adoption centre was also limited, reducing the chances of matching animals with suitable adoptive families. On the other hand, illegal breeding and smuggling have not seemed to stop, leaving many abandoned and abused animals waiting to be healed. But whatever challenges are waiting for us, we still strive to care for our animals until they find their forever homes.

Stepping into its second century, the SPCA’s vision remains to take a leading role in the creation of a better future for animals in Hong Kong. This year marks the centenary milestone of the SPCA. Over the past 100 years, Hong Kong has experienced rapid economic development, together with an increase in public awareness of animal welfare. This issue of Pawprint covers the brief history of the SPCA along with the development of Hong Kong to showcase the effort we have put into animal welfare over the years.

In our city, street cats can be spotted on many corners. With the overlapping of light and shadow, one of the most distinctive signs of these cats that is easily recognised, is the missing corner of one of their ears. Under the Cat Colony Care Programme (CCCP), we are sincerely thankful to over 1,100 dedicated volunteers who have helped us build over 1,900 cat colonies across Hong Kong in the past 20 years. These cats have one of their ears clipped, representing the promise of guardianship made by this group of cat lovers. It is not a missing corner, but a mark of happiness. This issue of Pawprint is CCCP’s 20th Anniversary special edition which contains an article about the world of ear-tipped cats.

Over the past few months, the city went into lockdown to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, and everyone's hearts have been filled with fear and uneasiness. While we are going through a hard time, we still stand together to protect our beloved animals. We never leave them alone, as the wonderful bond between humans and animals is heart-warming. In this issue of Pawprint, we share stories about the love between humans and animals; their love shining all the brighter in these difficult times.

2020 marks the 99th anniversary of the SPCA. The Cantonese pronunciation of “99” symbolises that happiness comes in pairs. Hence, in 2020 we would like to encourage more loving families to adopt in pairs - a pair of dogs or cats, or even adopt two different species of small animals. In this issue of Pawprint, you will find many heart-melting stories of owners keeping more than one pets at home.

• “Jewel - a treasure to be treasured” – recaps the amazing journey of an animal cruelty case victim turned a princess in a home where she has become the center of love and affection.

At the SPCA, we believe that each and every animal deserve equal attention and protection. This is exactly what our Veterinary Department has been doing on a daily basis - we provide care to both owned and homeless animals. In this issue’s cover story, we share with readers how our veterinary team put the mission ‘What You Spend on Yours Helps those Outdoors” into action. Other highlights include: a column where Dr Jane our Chief Veterinary Surgeon shares tips on caring for three-legged dogs; the danger of using “Bubble Backpacks”, and a feature article on “Duty of Care”, a concept which has been brought up in the proposed amendment of the ordinance related to the prevention of cruelty to animal. Aside from the wonderful adoption story of Clifford who is now living happily in in the Netherlands, we also have an interview story of a CCCP carer, and last but not least, a set of DIY instructions on how to create a spinning bottle feeder puzzle for your dog companions.

Ever since the official establishment of the SPCA 98 years ago, enthusiastic volunteers have been our strong and unrelenting backing; it is only with their valuable time and unremitting efforts that the SPCA can provide a number of animal welfare and education services to the community, allowing more animals and citizens to receive help. This issue’s cover story introduces to readers the SPCA’s diverse volunteer service areas, so that citizens from all ages and backgrounds can contribute their strengths and talents.
