"As we turn to autumn, we have some cosy autumnal projects for you; not least the Shades of Autumn Quilt by Julie Alderson. This quilt is the last in Julie’s series of seasonal quilts inspired the landscape of the Scottish island where she lives. The Rose Wreath Cushion makes use of upholstery fabric sample books which have wonderful autumn colours. Margaret Lee’s Tweed Work Bag is a hark back to days gone by while the Scandi Quilt features Makower’s 2021 Scandi fabric collection. I love an ombré fabric and was drawn to make the Nebulus Quilt. Be warned, it is a big quilt, but it’s oh so worth it if you have a king size bed! Stuart’s block in Stashbusting this month is also suitable autumnal.

I’m writing my column this month as I recover from the Festival of Quilts which was held in August, the first big quilt show in the UK since the pandemic struck the country in 2020. And what a show it was! Although probably a once-only thing, everyone loved having the extra space. My former sidekick, Helen, has reviewed the show for us. There have been many lockdown projects over the last eighteen months and one such project was the Shipton Trees Quilt. Roz Johnson tells us about Using Fabric Sample Books as a precursor to her floral cushion project and Deborah Nash was recently inspired by the Sophie Taeuber-Arp exhibition at Tate Modern."

Sadly this is the last issue of P&Q but we still have some great articles to inspire you. 
Some quick pieced quilts for you this month featuring fabrics from Art Gallery Fabrics – The Great Outdoors Quilt is the perfect quilt for lounging on in the garden, while the cute Petite Circus Playmat features classic circus figures. If pastel quilts are your thing, then perhaps the Butterfly Bows Cot Quilt will inspire you; it can also be made quite quickly. The Sewing Machine Throw Cover features haberdashery fabrics from Makower and will keep the dust off your machine when it’s not in use. Stuart’s Stashbusting block this month is an old classic. As this is the last issue, we are going to be unable to finish the Calendar Quilt project I’m afraid; a different quilt setting alternating the blocks with plain squares will enable you to make a quilt at least. Not finishing the quilt as Roz designed it is one of the hardest parts about the magazine closing, for both of us.

We’ve got some excellent articles for you to read this month. Helen visited Quilts UK for us and has reviewed the winning quilts in the first show at Malvern for three years. On a more personal level, we take a look at the Icknield Quilters recent exhibition celebrating their 30th anniversary. We also visit the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow while our regular Colour Me contributor, Kenzo Nakamura explains the background to some of his recent designs in Exploring Pentagons.

And so, there we have it; 335 issues over thirty seven years, from humble quarterly beginnings to a monthly magazine enjoyed by many. I want to thank each and every one of you for reading and enjoying the magazine over all those years.


A nice variety of projects for you this month. The Amelia Quilt from Makower will help you improve your HST-making skills for sure! More Half Square Triangles with the Picnic Quilt featuring wonderful summery prints from Tilda while the Summer Geese Runner will add a touch of the Mediterranean to your summer dining. The Scrappy Cushions let you play with what you’ve got in your scrap pile. We’ve all played the game, now make the quilt with the Spot the Difference Quilt. Such fun! We make a delightful clematis block in our Calendar Quilt this month while Stuart’s block in Stashbusting is a stylish quilt that is Layer Cake friendly. I’m sorely tempted to make this one!

We continue to be able to enjoy attending quilt shows again and Helen has been busy visiting the Quilt and Stitch Village Show in Uttoxeter to view the competition quilts on display and then headed south to visit the Man Made exhibition in Somerset; this is the second exhibition held at Midsomer Quilting created solely for male quilters. Deborah Nash also tells us about the textile designer, Althea McNish and her wonderfully vibrant fabrics in Textiles with a Tropical Eye.


A range of traditional projects to tempt you this month from the bright Pool Party Quilt to the subtle palette of the Magnolia Rose Quilt. If you want to make a quick small project, the Fractal Pillow enlarges a block pattern to make a pillow, while the China Blue Table Runner will add a touch of style to your dining table. The Double Windmill Spiral Quilt showcases our own Stuart Hillard’s Indigo Elements collection for Craft Cotton Co. His block this month in Stashbusting takes the traditional Nine Patch block to another level. Our Calendar Quilt block this month features traditional hexagons with 3D flowers.

This issue sees the welcome return of competition quilt show reviews with a look at the Scottish Quilting Show. Joanna O’Neill tells us about the ‘Sauvage’ at Farfield Mill exhibition, a stunning collection of quilts from the 2020 European Patchwork Meeting. Mike Reynolds also tells us about his quilting journey to date in Why I Started Patchwork and Quilting.


What better flower to celebrate spring than the tulip? The Tulips Quilt can be made in your favourite tulip colours so you can create your own tulip garden. The Baby Safari Quilt combines various techniques to make a delightful play quilt, while the Catherine Wheel Quilt is a simple EPP wall hanging. As soon as Julie Alderson shared an image of her Allsorts Medallion Quilt with me, my first thought was liquorice allsorts, and so it was named! As this is the Spring issue, we have two spring flower blocks in our Calendar Quilt. Stuart’s block in Stashbusting features fresh pastel colours.

Judi Mendelssohn visited the Ledbury Quilters’ Exhibition late last year and shows us the wonderful quilts on display there. Kelly Fenton shares with us the calming nature of lavender and how using those colours can show us the Beauty of Lavender and we also have an update on this year’s Quilt & Stitch Village Show in Uttoxeter.


What projects do we have this month to tempt you? The Jewel Tones Quilt is a triumph in triangles featuring some exciting bohemian fabrics from Makower while their Hedgerow Quilt is somewhat calmer. No February issue would be complete without a hearts project and this year we feature Charmed Hearts, a charm pack friendly quilt. Talking of charm packs, if you need a quilt in a hurry then the Woodland Charm Quilt is for you. Chris Franses’ Purple Tiles Quilt was inspired by a tiled floor she found. We make a hearts block in this month’s Calendar Quilt block and Stuart’s block in Stashbusting also features triangles.

If you enjoyed seeing the quilts in the World Wide Whispers exhibition in the last issue (January 2022 issue 330), you’ll be interested to read about The Woman behind the World Wide Whispers. Helen Kent tells us about the Kerslake Hexagon Quilt and we also take a look at the Liberty Linus Quilts Exhibition.


Sometimes having a sewalong or deadline is the best way of ensuring you complete a quilt and block of the month programmes are excellent for this. I was more than delighted when Roz Johnson asked if I would be interested in another Calendar Quilt. Many readers will remember her original quilt from ten years ago which was a wonderful quilt. This new version featuring dimensional appliqué is no less wonderful and I hope you’ll be inspired to make your own version. The Scratchy Cat Cushion will bring a wry smile to the face of the cat lovers amongst you. For the traditional quilter we have the Rainbow Quilt, a Log Cabin style quilt. If you’ve received new baby news over the festive period the Scrap Happy Cot Quilt can be made in a hurry, or why not make the Pirates Quilt? The Drawstring Backpack is also a great make. Stuart’s block this month in Stashbusting will hopefully help you make a dent in your scrap pile.

Joanna O’Neill has been lucky enough to visit two exhibitions for us recently. First up is Resurgence featuring quilts from The Quilters’’ Guild while the Changing Minds exhibition is the second ‘Chinese whispers’ collection of quilts by World Wide Whispers. Based on an idea by Ann Hill, we’ll find out more in next month’s issue, but in the meantime, enjoy the quilts.

The festive season will soon be upon us and we feature some seasonal projects as ever for you. A couple of quick makes are the Ho Ho Ho Bunting and Let it Snow Wall Hanging if you are looking for some last minute decorations for your home. The Scandi Table Runner and Placemats will add a touch of Scandi-style to your Christmas table, while the Candy Counter Quilt takes inspiration from American candy. Inspiration closer to home for Mandy Munroe with her Windows at Kew quilt. If you are lucky enough to have a bit of sewing time this festive season, the Tranquility Quilt will be the perfect quilt for you to make. Stuart’s block this month in Stashbusting is suitably festive!

Barbara Chainey and Chris Franses tell us more about another of Barbara’s Heritage Quilts, the Rolling Star Quilt for which Chris has created a pattern. Anyone for EPP? I know I’m tempted! We also find out more about the recently discovered Marsden Quilt.

Another packed issue for you this month and, I hope, a good variety of projects for you to make. The Around the World Quilt from Makower will make a great wall hanging and, dare I say it, Christmas gift! Similarly, Daisy’s Guitar Quilt is a lovely quick pieced quilt for the guitarist in your life. Katharine Guerrier encourages us to get back into letter writing with her stylish Stationery Folder while the Hearts and Flowers Quilt is a great way to get ahead for your spring quilting. If it’s quick piecing you are after, the Cobweb Hexie Table Topper would make an ideal Halloween project and the Sweet Dreams Quilt is also an easy make. Stuart’s block in Stashbusting this month is an awesome design; a Firecracker! We continue our look at various projects that have come together during the pandemic with All in the Same Storm: Pandemic Patchwork Stories. We Meet Nadia Arbach who has a decluttering podcast while Sheilah Daughtree tells us more about the Quilting with Liberty Fabrics gallery at the recent Festival of Quilts.


"We’ve got a wonderful mix of projects for you this month with a couple of stunning appliqué quilts. The Lepidoptera Wall Hanging combines fusible appliqué with a little foundation piecing while the Hawaiian Staycation Wall Hanging is a great slow stitching project to take on holiday with you. As it is still summer and a time for being outside, we have some lovely bright quilts to tempt you. Tropical Sunshine is a simply pieced quilt, as is the Summer Plaid Quilt while the Summer Watermelon Quilt can be pieced quickly too. I’m daring to mention the ‘C’ word as some of us like plenty of time to make quilts for the festive season and the Yappy Christmas Quillow is a great project to make for a younger relative. As we emerge from all the government restrictions, exhibitions and events are starting to pop up around the country. This month we’re heading north as Kath Garner tells us all about her visit to the North Country Quilts exhibition at the Bowes Museum and Joanna O’Neill went to see the Journeys exhibition by the international textile group Crossing Oceans. This time is also a time for reflection on the past eighteen months and Same Sea, Different Boat is one such project."

A great selection of projects for you this month. I just love the No Drama Llama Cushion designed by Debbie von Grabler-Crozier. Isn’t he wonderful? What better way to welcome summer dining than with the Summer Runner? The Ladder Stitch Quilt is a good project for practising an accurate seam allowance, while the Mystery Strip Sampler is great for using pre-cut strips. The Summer Kaleidoscope Quilt is Julie Alderson’s summer project inspired by the Scottish island where she lives. How Does Your Garden Grow? combines several techniques to make a cosy lap quilt. Stuart’s block in Stashbusting is an offset Log Cabin style block.

Joanna O’Neill met Tracey Pereira recently and she tells us about Tracey’s longarm quilting in Meet a Quilter and we find out more about Claire Wilcox, Senior Curator of fashion at the V&A and her memoir to textiles in Patch Work."

"It’s a really packed issue for you this month. Our cover quilt is the wonderfully contemporary Modern Throw quilt designed by Anja Townrow, a quilt she designed during lockdown. The Michiko Quilt features a quintessentially Oriental fabric collection from Makower. If you were inspired by her article on Inktense pencils in the Winter 2020 issue, Joanna O’Neill brings us her Baltimore by Number quilt. From America, we have the Traveller’s Rest Quilt which maker, Kristen Clay, has beautifully hand quilted. A bit more improv piecing from Katharine Guerrier with her All Squared Up wall hanging, while you can practise your curved piecing with the Primavera Runner. The Half Hexie Chase quilt combines simple piecing with a little bit of appliqué and Stuart’s Stashbusting block this month celebrates neutral fabrics.

Quilters love to make quilts to mark special birthdays and celebrations, both individually and as group exercises and Mandy Munroe tells us about the quilts her Jo Blox quilt group made for each other in Bubbles and Fizz. Meanwhile if you are interested in using technology in your quilt making, Joanna O’Neill takes a look at using various programmes and apps in Quilt Design goes Digital."

As ever we have a packed issue for you this month. We seem to have gone a little pineapple crazy; did you know the pineapple was a sign of opulence in Victorian times? Katie’s Cats Quilt is such a fun bright quilt and while not a true pineapple block pattern, the overall effect is similar. While the Pineapple Pincushions are a great introduction to foundation piecing on a small scale, and they use up some of those small scraps we keep. The Iris Table Topper is Julie Alderson’s summer project for us inspired by the irises at the edge of the beaches on her Scottish island home. The Pamper Quilt features a stylish fabric collection from Makower while Chris Franses’ Curved Pinwheels Quilt is strip roll friendly. Stuart’s block this month in Stashbusting is perfect for spring!

Whilst it may be some time before we can attend quilt shows, some exhibitions are being held virtually and one such event was for the Quiltmakers of Gee’s Bend exhibition which was due to be held in London. Deborah Nash listened in on a virtual tour for us. We meet Linda Halpin in our Meet a Quilter series of articles and Kenzo Nakamura further explores design in his Geometric Quilt Experiment.

"Several of the projects in this issue are scrap friendly. I know we’ve all been working from our stashes more than usual this last year but the pile of scraps never seems to get any smaller does it? Janet Goddard’s Scrappy Crosses features textured prints left over from other projects but would look great in any selection of fabrics, while the Scrappy Mini Quilt will help use those little bits we keep but aren’t sure why. If you’ve got scraps that work together, then why not have a go at making the Pickle Dish Runner? Fly Past is made from a strip roll but could equally be made from scraps. If you want to treat yourself to some new fabrics, the William Morris Flowers quilt features fabrics from the William Morris collection from Craft Cotton Company. Stuart’s block in Stashbusting this month will give you plenty of practice making HSTs.

Looking after our mental health during the pandemic has been paramount and Dr. Kelly Fenton tells us about the numerous positives our craft brings to the Mental Health and Well-being of a Quilter. We meet Hilary Gooding in Meet a Quilter and Julie Alderson shows us her Sketchbook Inspirations. And finally, renowned quilter Barbara Chainey and her partner-in-crime, Chris Franses, bring us the first in a new series of articles of New Quilts from Old as Barbara shares some of her antique quilts with us which Chris re-imagines for today."

"So we start this New Year with lots of wonderful projects for you. One thing I found when I had a quilt shop was that the festive season is a time a lot of people announce additions to their families, so we have a couple of delightful cot quilt projects for you this month! The Plaid Cot Quilt is just so lovely and can be made in any colour combination while the Winter Warmer Cot Quilt is a great project for a beginner. Careful fabric placement adds a twist to the Caribbean Whirlwind quilt and creates secondary quilt designs in Dublin Steps. If foundation piecing is your thing, then Anja Townrow brings us her On the Bright Side Cushions. Our Let’s Go Shopping shop owner has made the Spring Stained Glass Wall Hanging and we start a series of seasonal projects from regular contributor, Julie Alderson, who has taken inspiration from life on Scottish island she lives on with her Oystercatcher Quilt.
Stuart’s block in this month’s Stashbusting would also make a nice bright cot quilt.

Quilters are resourceful people and many quilt groups, including mine, have embraced holding virtual meetings via Zoom. Joanna O’Neill tells us more about this new way of meeting in Zoom for Quilters. Our local quilt shops need us more than ever so we’ll be featuring numerous Let’s Go Shopping articles over the coming months. This month Janet Goddard visits Stitch and Knit for us. We also find out more about the Quilts for Veterans made by Portishead Quilters in Bristol."

"A nice mix of projects and articles for you this month; not too festive and hopefully an idea or two of things to make or gifts for quilting friends. The Scandinavian style is ever popular at Christmas and the Nordic Knit Bed Runner which will add a touch of style to the end of your bed as well as keep your toes warm! The Christmas Decorations from Mary Mayne are just delightful. They work well as tree decorations, or why not string them together to make bunting for a mantelpiece? Hearts in the Meadow combines appliqué with simple piecing while the cute Cot Quilt also combines heart appliqué with other techniques. If you haven’t tried curved piecing before, Ombré Bubbles is the project for you. Stuart’s Stashbusting block this month is perfect for the festive season.

Joanna O’Neill tells us about Inktense pencils in Experimenting with Colour and we find out a little about the Textiles of the British Museum now that it has been able to reopen. Further afield, Kenzo Nakamura from Japan tells us about creating Islamic-inspired quilt designs and the quilt he has created as a result. Regular contributor, Debbie von Grabler-Crozier tells us about her First and Last quilts and we meet the Hampshire Modern Quilt Guild in Introducing."

"One thing that our pause during the lockdown confirmed to me was that I really need a deadline to work to; without them I don’t accomplish much at all. I’d longed to have a nice long break for years, but I achieved very little sewing during the summer when I finally had time for plenty. Luckily many of our regular contributors were much more productive than me and they have continued to provide wonderful quilt projects for the magazine. This month we feature the stunning Folk Friends quilt from Makower. The Maple Farm Star Quilt features soft gentle autumnal tones while the Star Flower Quilt combines a little appliqué and piecing. We have a touch of the East with the Chinese Lanterns Quilt, while Rosslyn’s Quilt brings us right back to the UK and Donegal, just so cosy. The Unicorn and Castles Quilt would make a great little play quilt for Christmas. Stuart’s block this month in Stashbusting is equally cosy!

Another great issue for you this month with, I hope, a little something for everyone. Clara’s Garden is another lovely foundation pieced quilt designed by Lynne Goldsworthy for Makower. Lynne always manages to find cool ways of creating quilt designs. In Herman Revisited, Mandy Munroe re-imagines her Herman Hugs quilt which was first featured in the August 2017 issue of our former sister magazine, Popular Patchwork. The Colour Brush Quilt plays with the traditional Nine Patch block while the Charming Triangles Quilt by our Let’s Go Shopping owner, Sue Ross, makes great use of those charm packs we all have in our stashes. The Sunset Horse wall hanging mixes several techniques and Stuart’s Stashbusting column this month features a super quick pieced block design.

At the time of writing, it has not been possible for quilt shows and exhibitions to be held but with a bit of lateral thinking the organisers of the Festival of Quilts were able to hold Beyond the Festival of Quilts; a virtual quilt show. I’ve written a ‘review’ of the winners as well as highlighting a few of my favourites from their online show. Joanna O’Neill managed a socially distanced visit to The Quilt Shop in Morpeth for our Let’s Go Shopping feature and also pre-lockdown, Judi Mendelssohn visited a one-woman exhibition and tells us about it in Vanessa’s Patchwork Journey. Regular contributor, Janet Goddard, tells us about her First and Last quilts and we meet Guernsey Patchwork and Quilters in Introducing.

"For many of us, our quilting has been our salvation during these difficult months, for others (me included) our sewing mojo may have gone AWOL during the pandemic, but hopefully we can inspire you to create again. Our cover project this issue is the stylish Linen Texture Block Runner; an ideal project for beginners to get to grips with patchwork and quilting. We all know Christmas seems to come around earlier and earlier each year but we love the Yuletide Quilt from Makower so couldn’t wait to share it with you. Our cover star this issue is the Sunshine and Shadow Charm Quilt by Chris Franses; it’s also a great stashbuster if you don’t have any charm packs. Everyone has a lovely ombré batik in their stash and the Bargello Mini Wall Hangings just need one fat quarter of a fancy fabric. The Chain of Squares Runner is just the thing to keep your toes warm at night, or add a bit of stylish detail to the end of your bed. Again, make it scrappy if you want. The Sail Away Beach Bag makes great use of a large-scale border print while Stuart’s block this month in Stashbusting makes a wonderful quilt.

The Scottish Quilting Show in Glasgow was one of the last of the main quilt shows to manage to still go ahead this spring and Joanna O’Neill tells us all about the winning quilts. We also find out about Vivian Suter and her recent exhibition while Sheilah Daughtree was lucky enough to go along to an open day showcasing new Liberty Fabrics at Winterbourne House near Birmingham. Cecilia Slinn shows us her First and Last quilts and we meet Roding Quilters in Introducing.

As we welcome spring, Margaret Lee’s delightful Spring Garden Cushion features some floral appliqué (I really must try playing with tweed sometime, the colours are wonderful). We look forward to summer with Janet Goddard’s Bee-utiful Quilt as well as the Sail Away Cushions from Makower and Julie Alderson’s wonderful appliqué picture, By the Sea. The Mystical Land Quilt is a lovely throw-sized quilt and the Scrappy Cot Quilt will help you make a dent in your scrap pile. Les Sirenes sur la Mer is an introduction to art quilt techniques from new contributor, Janika Hagan. Stuart’s block this month in Stashbusting is a quick strip pieced block.We sent Joanna O’Neill up to Scotland to review Sheila Dalgleish’s latest exhibition, North South East West while Deborah Nash enjoyed a visit to the seaside when she went to see the We Will Walk exhibition in Margate featuring quilts from Gee’s Bend.

"Lots of piecing projects to tempt you this month. I’m quite excited by Kerry Foster’s Improv Adventure Quilt; a relatively painless introduction to improv piecing and an invitation not to be quite so regimented in quilt making. The Jungle Friends Quilt is the perfect ‘first bed quilt’ project when your little ones move into their first big bed. The Spring Greens Quilt is the ideal for using up all those different greens and blues in your stash while the Spring Table Runner and Mats are just the thing for decorating your table for Easter next month. The Joanna’s Choice quilt was so-named after designer, Betty Croke, submitted numerous potential quilt designs to me and this was the one I chose. I hope you like it too! Stuart’s Stashbusting block this month mixes two traditional blocks to make a great quilt pattern.
We’ve focussed on mini quilt challenge reviews in this issue. I always love taking a look at the entries in the Journal Quilt Challange each year and I think Helen equally enjoys a trip down to Somerset to review the annual 12 x 12 Mini Quilt Challenge; probably because she gets to go to a quilt shop at the same time! Helen also managed to find the time to go to London to take a look at the Solar System Quilts as the Royal Astronomical Society celebrates its 200th birthday. Chris Hammacott starts a new series of articles on Sustainability in a P&Q World, looking this month at pins and needles. Eileen Shone shows us her First and Last quilts and we meet Oast Quilters in Introducing."

"We’ve got a wonderful selection of quilt projects to inspire you this month. The Hillside Quilt makes great use of the new Great British Quilter Back to Basics collection designed by Sarah Ashford for Dashwood Studio. If quick piecing is your thing, the Concentric Squares quilt is a simple quilt to make, add a few HST units and you’ve made Berry Burst. If you have some leftover strips from a strip roll pack, Katharine Guerrier’s Strippy Table Runner is a great way of using them up. I used Liberty Tana Lawn for the first time in my Liberty Fans Wall Hanging and I think I’m in love! They also quilted beautifully too. We make the final blocks and complete our Swirling Stars Quilt while Stuart’s Stashbusting block this month uses up all those thin little strips we keep. The block would be fun using up selvedges too!

"The New Year is a time to look ahead, make plans and resolutions. If you didn’t make a start on the Swirling Stars quilt which we started in the December issue, it’s not too late to join in our sewalong and make the quilt with us over the next few issues. Everyone loves a rainbow and the Rainbow Quilt combines quick piecing, a little appliqué as well as the quilt-as-you-go method. The Teabag Quilt features strip piecing; a simple design that would work in different styles of fabrics. Strip piecing is used to make the kaleidoscope blocks in the Dew and Moss Quilt while the Dresden Blue Quilt is a quilt design that combines two traditional blocks. "We’ve got a couple of quicker festive makes for you this month. As soon as I saw the Robin Table Centre and Mats, I knew they would be perfect for P&Q! So cute! While the Festive Wall Hanging designed by Janet Goddard has a folk art feel to it. The Christmas Star Cushion from Makower features strip piecing and the Christmas Wreath Table Runner will help you perfect piecing with triangles. The Shimmering Christmas Kaleidoscope Quilt uses starry fabrics and we start a new skill builder miniseries quilt designed by Chris Franses. The Swirling Stars Quilt will run over the next few issues. Stuart’s block this month in Stashbusting certainly helps make a dent in our stashes.
The written articles this month are particularly good, in my opinion. Helen reviews the recent West Country Quilt and Textile Show while Sheilah Daughtree tells us about the Mysteries of the Acton Top. I was incredibly inspired when I read about dyeing with natural dyes in Deborah Nash’s article, Dyeing in the Wild. I can see me growing some different ‘crops’ on my allotment next year for sure! Sue Warburton tells us about her First and Last quilts and we meet the Raw Edgers in Introducing."

"We have an issue jam-packed with projects this month. We continue our countdown to Christmas with our Advent Calendar. More triangles in the Improv Triangle Cushion, a great project for using up small scraps in your stash. If you’re a fan of Japanese fabrics, you’ll love the Indigo Quilt. With a nod to the autumnal season, the Woodland Walk lap quilt will keep you warm while the Rhapsody Runner features some stunning fabrics. We complete our Quilters’ Village series quilt this month and also complete the Stars and Flowers block of the month quilt. Stuart’s Stashbusting block this month is called Sparks from the Bonfire. 
We have two great quilt galleries for you in this issue. First up is a review of the Great Northern Quilt Show in Harrogate which had some wonderful winning quilts this year. We then hop across to Cumbria and visit Farfield Mill and the World Wide Whispers exhibition; an intriguing idea and concept. Sara Cook tells us about her First and Last quilts and we meet Stalybridge Patchwork and Quilting Group in Introducing."

"A packed issue for you as always. Projects to inspire whatever your level of skill or experience, well-written articles and of course quilts a plenty! Our Halloween Cushion has a touch of the Mexican Day of the Dead about it; one for the teenagers maybe? We continue our preparations for the festive season with our Christmas Tree Wall Hanging. If you are missing the warmth of summer, the Tuscan Hills Wall Hanging may be the project for you. We reach the end of our Down on the Croft quilt series and make the last blocks in our Stars and Flowers block of the month project. We make some Ohio Star blocks in The Quilters’ Village and Stuart has a great block for us in Stashbusting. We love seeing the quilts you have made using Stuart’s blocks!
We all took a moment to breathe after the Festival of Quilts in August as the run up to the show had been rather hectic. Helen shows us the winning quilts from the show, while Sheilah Daughtree was lucky enough to spend some time with the curators of the Beautiful Baltimore Quilts gallery at the show. On a smaller scale, we look at a local quilt group’s exhibition, Passage to Pershore and we also take a look at how to get your quilt accepted into a juried quilt show in Show Business! We meet Walsall Patchwork and Quilters in Introducing while Jane Rollason shows us her First and Last quilts."

"The Scandi Christmas Quilt features this year’s Scandi collection from Makower, but it’s a great quilt design that would make a wonderful quilt in whatever fabrics you use. The Quilters’ Village is a stunning quilt designed by Mary Mayne. We’ll run this project over the next couple of issues because of the work involved in making it. Triangle Twist is a lovely bright modern quilt, while Julie Alderson’s Autumnal Wall Hanging mixes several techniques to make this delightful mini quilt. We’re nearing the end of our Stars and Flowers block of the month quilt and make another row in our Down on the Croft series quilt. Stuart’s block in Stashbusting this month is certainly a great stashbusting project and introduces us to string piecing.
Jane Rollason shows us some of the quilts from the Russian Quilt Fest held in Moscow in the spring. We find out more about the needles made in France by Bohin in Beautiful Collaborators: the Pin and the Needle and Joanna O’Neill tells us about Thistle Quilters in Scotland, one of the oldest quilt groups in the UK. Julie Roddy shows us her First and Last quilts and we meet North Barn Quilters in Introducing."

"I really like our cover quilt, Framed Nine Patch quilt by Mandy Munroe. The traditional Nine Patch block has so many possibilities; it’s one of my favourites. Although out of necessity and time pressures I tend to machine quilt a lot of my quilts these days, I love hand quilting and Greta Fitchett’s Welsh-style Quilted Cushion is a lovely way of combining both quilting techniques. The Forest Quilt makes excellent use of a printed panel to make a delightful quilt. From ‘Down Under’, Brenda Dean brings us the really useful Reversible Noodle Bags. We make our last curved EPP block in the Stars and Flowers block of the month quilt and some traditional EPP hexie flowers in this month’s instalment of Down on the Croft. Stuart’s Stashbusting block this month is a delightful Little Crosses block.
I was lucky enough to visit the National Quilt Championships at Sandown Racecourse where there were some stunning quilts on display. While Ruth Garner tells us about Beartown Patchwork & Quilters’ exhibition as the group celebrates its 35th anniversary. Longevity in our craft is never something to be sneezed at (P&Q is now in its 34th year!). And talking of longevity, we take a look at the celebrations of this year’s 40th Birthday of The Quilters’ Guild. We also view more textile treasures from the British Library in Silk, Theatre and Drama. Carolyn Gibbs tells us about her First and Last quilts and we meet the Heirloom Quilters in Introducing."
