The bands we have covered, big and small, the albums we have reviewed has led to our voice gaining in volume. I remember hearing Devildriver for the first time when I was 15, I was blown away by the relentless energy and the damn ferocious riffs. I remember hearing Whitechapel for the first time when I was 15, the raw intensity of their music blew my mind! Now, nearly nine years later, the band have evolved into what they are today. Mark of the Blade is a statement for Whitechapel and because of this, that's why they are on the cover as we lift the lid on this new chapter on one of modern metal's strongest bands. 

Behind the scenes, things at Distorted Sound have been in overdrive, as new members have been brought in and a change in the guard as Jessica Howkins joins me as co-Editor in Chief. This issue reflects this strong unity we have with our staff. This issue contains some of the finest bands metal has to offer, from the fun-filled thrashings of Municipal Waste to the iconic behemoths of Testament and Death Angel. Festival season is also truly well and underway and in this issue we've got coverage from two of the biggest the UK has to offer. I (Jessica here!) have been attending festivals for years on end now, the most common is Download. There’s nothing better than going to a field, as wet as this years was and just dedicating all of your time to your favourite bands. I have never known such fun until finally getting to see Municipal Waste live and charging into the pits and watching my favourite band Iron Maiden perform the way they did. The thing about heavy metal is that we as fans love to champion the greats. In fact, I think metal is really the only genre where we truly champion the bands that have had an impact on our lives. Whilst bringing forth things that are new and exciting, there always is time to reflect and remind ourselves why these bands are so revered in our scene. 

This issue is all about championing the greats of metal and some of the greatest bands metal has to offer grace our issue. One such band is Destruction, the German thrash legends have been at the top of their game for decades and with the release of album number 14, we discover why we are all under attack! Similarly, death metal maestros Immolation reveal their sources for inspiration in a world that is dying and we bask in the glory of the pivotal Nemesis Divina with Satyricon and journey into fantasy with Blind Guardian. 

Whilst championing the greats of our music is important, we still must focus on those bands that are breaking through today. Manchester's Broken Teeth have ruled the roost of underground hardcore for years now and finally their debut record is here, we find out with the band what it means to be hardcore. We also welcome the return of Despised Icon who are gearing up to unleash the beast!  

With a full breakdown of this year's Impericon festival and coverage of bands across the entire spectrum of heavy metal; from black metal rifflords Dark Funeral to the new face of thrash metal, Nervosa; there is something for everyone in this issue. And really, that's what metal is all about.

This can result in a long wait and for Walls of Jericho, eight years is a very long time. 2015 is almost over and what a year we’ve had for heavy metal. Across all the varying sub-genres we’ve had some cracking releases (be sure to check out our top albums of the year!).
