I remember hearing Whitechapel for the first time when I was 15, the raw intensity of their music blew my mind! Now, nearly nine years later, the band have evolved into what they are today. Mark of the Blade is a statement for Whitechapel and because of this, that's why they are on the cover as we lift the lid on this new chapter on one of modern metal's strongest bands. 

Behind the scenes, things at Distorted Sound have been in overdrive, as new members have been brought in and a change in the guard as Jessica Howkins joins me as co-Editor in Chief. This issue reflects this strong unity we have with our staff. I have never known such fun until finally getting to see Municipal Waste live and charging into the pits and watching my favourite band Iron Maiden perform the way they did. The thing about heavy metal is that we as fans love to champion the greats. In fact, I think metal is really the only genre where we truly champion the bands that have had an impact on our lives. Whilst bringing forth things that are new and exciting, there always is time to reflect and remind ourselves why these bands are so revered in our scene. 

This issue is all about championing the greats of metal and some of the greatest bands metal has to offer grace our issue. One such band is Destruction, the German thrash legends have been at the top of their game for decades and with the release of album number 14, we discover why we are all under attack! Similarly, death metal maestros Immolation reveal their sources for inspiration in a world that is dying and we bask in the glory of the pivotal Nemesis Divina with Satyricon and journey into fantasy with Blind Guardian. 

Whilst championing the greats of our music is important, we still must focus on those bands that are breaking through today. Manchester's Broken Teeth have ruled the roost of underground hardcore for years now and finally their debut record is here, we find out with the band what it means to be hardcore. We also welcome the return of Despised Icon who are gearing up to unleash the beast!

12 months. 12 issues. Distorted Sound celebrated our first year as a publication this month and what a year it's been. The bands we have covered, big and small, the albums we have reviewed has led to our voice gaining in volume. I remember hearing Devildriver for the first time when I was 15, I was blown away by the relentless energy and the damn ferocious riffs. Nearly nine years after hearing them for the first time, they grace the cover of this publication with their utterly stunning new record, Trust No One. Read on to hear Dez Fafara tell it all about their new album and what the future holds for the band. Plus! We talked to thrash legends Overkill about their remarkable career, find out what's next for Polish death metal goliath Vader and get the lowdown on the new Avatar record.

Often we forget that our favourite bands are just people like us. People who have their own lives outside of the music they craft. This can result in a long wait and for Walls of Jericho, eight years is a very long time. Reigniting their fire and with the best album in their career, we explore all with vocalist Candace Kucsulain; from becoming a parent to dead lifting and regaining her passion for adrenaline pumping metal.

Whilst we at Distorted Sound love to champion what's new and cutting edge, we like to take a look to the past at some of metal's biggest and most influential bands and this issue is jam-packed with bands that have helped forge what metal is today. We look at the unsung heroes of hardcore punk, Discharge, who have influenced the likes of Metallica and Slayer to name but a few. We relish in the beer-soaked history of Exodus, take a look back at Winds of Creation with Poland's Decapitated and see why Killswitch Engage are still ruling the roost of metalcore with their fantastic new album Incarnate.

We look at the war machine of Sabaton's military driven power metal, get djent with Textures who give us a look into the upcoming Genotype and find out how fusing folk and metal works with Ensiferum. 2015 is almost over and what a year we’ve had for heavy metal. Across all the varying sub-genres we’ve had some cracking releases (be sure to check out our top albums of the year!). As we prepare for what 2016 will bring, we introduce SHVPES, see why Fallujah and Continents will take the metal world by storm and bask in the glory of Hell.
