Weight Of The World by MATT TUTHILL
Patrick McCullough waited in a back room of the Consol Energy Centre in Pittsburgh with a wooden shadow box in his hands. Inside was a gold medal he’d won for swimming in the Special Olympics, a photo of himself, and a note to John Cena, thanking him for “taking time out of your busy schedule to make my wish come true”.
Patrick, 18, who suffers from Down’s syndrome and a rare heart defect called tetralogy of Fallot—a leaky heart valve that’s been replaced once and is in danger of needing replacement again—had qualified for the Make-A-Wish programme. Like so many kids before him, Patrick made the request to meet his favourite WWE Superstar, John Cena—a request that would be granted. After an initial meeting with the McCullough family, Cena gave 20 tickets to Patrick’s parents, Carol and Joe, so that Patrick could bring all his friends from Reading, Pennsylvania, to Pittsburgh to watch the Royal Rumble.
Easy Muscle Meals by DEVIN ALEXANDER
Guys who don’t cook always use the same two excuses: 1) I don’t have time, or 2) I don’t know how. Kiss both of them goodbye. Even if you’re pulling 12-hour days, you have time for these recipes, which are so simple they’ll come out perfect on the first try.
Straight-Up: Arms by ERIC VELAZQUEZ
Nothing beats arm day. Like our weekly appointments with Homeland and Game of Thrones, we truly look forward to hitting our biceps and triceps. The skin-stretching pump and vascularity are immediate, visual indicators of a job well done. It should be noted, however, that the presence of a pump alone does not constitute the promise of growth. Training heavy will never go out of style, but when it comes to arm day, we (sometimes) smartly show restraint on load selection. A barbell curl where we sloppily swing the weight from A to B rarely does as much good as performing a rep precisely and with control. Adding weight in a safe manner allows us to build up our strength and heaps of dense, gravity-defeating muscle. Any good routine should include heavy and lighter work to target more total muscle fibres.
