How The Gift Was Made by TEAM FLEX Even before he earned his pro card in 2005, Phil Heath was dubbed “the next big thing”. A win on his IFBB debut at the 2006 Colorado Pro, quickly followed by another at the New York Pro a week later, cemented his position as bodybuilding’s rising star. Despite early criticism—some said he was all arms, too narrow and his torso too small—and the odd blip along the way, few could argue he hasn’t lived up to his promise. “A lot of guys have been touted as ‘the future of the sport’,” says the man known as The Gift. “I’m the only one who’s been able to follow through. I smashed the critics and justified the hype.”
My Olympia Scrapbook by GARY PHILLIPS I am fortunate to have been able to travel to the US over the last 16 years to photograph the best bodybuilders in the world, to see new Mr Olympias crowned and to meet so many other photographers in the press pit. Little did I know when I first picked up a camera and visited a local bodybuilding show in the UK that I would end up photographing the Mr Olympia for as long as I have. I look forward to many more.
The Men Who Made History by CHRIS LUND Chris Lund, our UK editor-in-chief since 1985, attended his first Mr Olympia in 1979 and photographed every subsequent battle, except 1980, for the next 30 years. He has taken some of the most famous photos in bodybuilding history and has shot virtually all the top pros from the 1980s onwards. Drawing on his own Olympia recollections and his conversations with the pros, he tells the story of the greatest bodybuilding show on earth.
