Catching Up With Khan by GREG MERRITT
He wasn’t supposed to come back. If you return to a posing dais after blowing out both knees and going a year between leg workouts, it can only end with embarrassment.
Or so said the haters pecking at keyboards. Zack Khan has never believed the hype about himself, so he wasn’t about to believe the hate. Instead, over the course of two years, he steadfastly rebuilt himself in his own dungeon gym. Last August, when he finally made his long-postponed pro debut, not only did he not embarrass himself, but he garnered respect and praise. As Khan’s inspiring comeback continues, we caught up with the British behemoth to learn how he’s re-inflating his wheels, how he trains his arms to keep them bigger than most people’s legs, and just how far he thinks he can climb in the IFBB Pro League.
Bodybuilding’s Greatest Comebacks by GREG MERRITT
Everyone loves a good comeback story—the type that fuels those lump-in-the-throat scenes in sports movies. A washed-up boxer steps back into the ring and, against all odds, KO’s the champ. A retired baseball pitcher returns in middle-age as a power hitter and propels his team to the championship. Hollywood has yet to make a tearjerker about a remarkable return to a posing dais, but it certainly has a lot of material to work with. Whether they overcame potentially career-killing ailments or rebounded after lengthy lay-offs, the 10 IFBB pros on our line-up pulled off the most dramatic comebacks in the history of bodybuilding.
Full-Court Press by MICHAEL BERG
Intensity Tip
It’s a mantra Phil maintains throughout his chest workout: to get the most out of presses and flyes, you want to fixate on a maximum pectoral stretch. “I really focus on making sure I keep my chin up, and really look up into the sky, he explains. “Doing that opens everything up for some reason, and helps elevate my ribcage to allow for a greater stretch, especially on the way down.
