Yeah, Buddy! Light Weight! by GREG MERRITT
Last summer, former Chicago Bears defensive lineman Anthony Adams starred in the comedic video “Stuff NFL Free Agents Say," which—thanks to coverage on ESPN—became a minor YouTube hit. The funniest moments are the training shots in which Adams bellows, “Light weight!" and “Yeah, buddy!" in the unmistakable Southern twang of Ronnie Coleman. When I sent the video to bodybuilders, including Phil Heath, all were amazed that Coleman had reached such a high level of public consciousness that laughs were generated by mimicking the battle cries he made famous. We assumed the eight-time Mr Olympia was relegated to the land of posing daises, but, as a result of his 1997–2005 reign at the top the world of muscles, he grew into something much greater—the über weight trainer.
Wide Horizons by MICHAEL BERG
“Everybody says practice makes perfect, but I don’t believe that at all," proclaims reigning two-time Mr Olympia Phil Heath. Fear begins to grow that this exclusive treatise on shoulder training may be derailed before it begins.
Fortunately, he elaborates. “What if you’re practising bad habits? What if you’re practising horrible form? Instead, if you have perfect practice, that’s the only way to be perfect—to hit the muscles you intend to. It’s no different from shooting free throws. Watch a great free-throw shooter go to the line: he has the same exact ritual every time. Bodybuilding should be the same way. We should replicate that same form every time to yield muscle. That approach is one reason why I think I’ve grown so fast in such a short period of time."
Big Ass Mass by BRYAN HAYCOCK
Bodybuilding is about more than just who has the best chest and abs. It’s even more than who has the biggest arms. To be a true bodybuilder, you’ve got to build a complete physique, which means you’ve got to have it all going on—including how you look from the rear. I would argue most of the Olympias won over the past 20 years were won because of incredible back development. Or at the very least, no one has won the Sandow with a weak back.
