Chest Construction by DENNIS JAMES and DAVE LEE “I started training in May of 1992," Dennis James says. Ask James what’s on his agenda on any given day, and aside from travel and appearances for his new supplement sponsor, Probiotica, “workout" is sure to be on his list. Even after his retirement at the 2010 Mr Olympia, up to his brief, one-shot comeback at last year’s Masters Olympia (where he placed third), James never missed scheduled gym time. “I love training," James states. “It makes me feel good. Whether I’m home or travelling, I feel like something is missing if I don’t get to the gym. What can I say, I love bodybuilding; I’m in it for life."
Never Back Down by LARRY BROWN “I always showed a great aptitude for football. I excelled very early among the boys in my age group," he says. With Correa playing football at a high level, he knew that had to become stronger and more conditioned to continue playing and staying competitive. So he took to the weights room to make himself unstoppable on the field. “When I first joined a gym, my goal was to improve my conditioning to become faster and to increase my muscle mass so I could have more explosiveness and be able to withstand contact," he says.
Going High-Def by GREG MERRITT Ripped, peeled, diced, shredded, razored, flayed, grainy, high-def—bodybuilding has many words for the extra-lean and desiccated look of superb contest conditioning. They all basically mean “Holy $#%@!" We celebrate 10 of the bodybuilders who repeatedly gave us those “Holy $#%@!" moments. In assembling this list, we had two requirements. First, they had to be IFBB pros. So that photo you saw on the Internet of a Turkish middleweight with invisible skin didn’t get him into this pantheon. Secondly, they had to consistently serve up cuts like a sushi chef. Samir Bannout displayed groundbreaking muscle separation when he won the 1983 Mr Olympia, but he was too frequently smooth in the years before and after. He’s not here, but nine men and one woman are—half of whom hold various Olympia titles. Ripped, peeled, diced—whatever you call them, they’ve helped bodybuilding go HD.
