Features in this issue include...
A Game Of Thrones by GREG MERRITT He already did the unprecedented. When he finished third in the Olympia last year, Shawn Rhoden became the first competitor to ever land in bodybuilding’s ruling triumvirate after placing out of the top 10 the year before. By comparison, if he climbs the final two rungs to victory this year it will not even be unusual. Four of the last seven Mr Olympias have bounded from third or lower to first in single giant leaps. That foursome includes Rhoden’s sponsor, Ronnie Coleman, who hopped the highest—ninth to first—and two men, Lee Haney and Dexter Jackson, who preceded Rhoden’s dream voyage by going from the three spot to the top spot over a span of 12 months.
Super Shredded by JIM STOPPANI High Reps - We’ve included very-high-rep sets to burn more calories during the workout. Research from the College of New Jersey found that doing 10-rep sets burned more calories during the workout than five-rep sets. This makes sense, as you perform more work when doing more reps; this is why we jacked the reps all the way up to 20 on some exercises in weeks 3-4. This “more work" effect is also the reason why we bumped up the total number of sets performed per workout in Weeks 5–8, to keep you burning more calories as your body begins adjusting to the programme.
No Small Feat by MICHAEL BERG Clearing the oxygen surrounding the chipped, battle- worn power rack with one mighty breath, Fred Smalls tenses his 240-pound frame, muscles flexing from his back down through his prodigious legs. The barbell rises as Smalls strains, stands, and finally straightens his torso and his knees, the shrill metallic rattle of plate on plate—eight in all— reverberating through the gym.
