We all dream of setting off to see the world in our Land Rovers, but that’s become a bit tricky just recently. So maybe now is a good time to rediscover the appeal of our own back yards.

That’s what a team from Land Rover’s US arm did a few years ago, when they set out to drive across America from coast to coast on unsurfaced roads. It’s an incredible undertaking – and one you can read about, starting this month, in the next two issues of The Landy.

Talking of unsurfaced roads, we’re trialling a new regular feature this month. Our sister magazine 4x4 is famous for its green lane roadbooks – and with so many Land Rover owners being keen on exploring Britain’s rights of way, we thought the idea might prove equally popular in The Landy. We only use lanes which are legal, of course, and completely sustainable – we’re kicking off this month in North Yorkshire, and we’d love to hear what our readers make of it!

There’s a slew of interesting vehicles in this month’s issue, too. A restored 90 with a 3.0-litre BMW diesel engine is our cover star, and you’ll also find a delightful Series I that’s been given a new lease of life courtesy of a Tdi engine implant.

A Series I is quite the investment, but you’ll still get plenty of them for the price of the new Land Rover we’ve test-driven this month. How much for a Discovery Commercial? We were startled to learn we were driving £73,000’s worth of van – and even more to realise that actually, even at that much money it felt worth every penny…

Some people shudder when they see a classic Land Rover that’s not as ‘right’ as possible. Others just appreciate a great truck.
Your view on the 107” Series I Station Wagon in this issue of The Landy will very much depend on which of these camps you’re in. It’s been brought back home after a life of hard work in Australia… then fitted with a Tdi engine, Stage 1 axles, full-syncro box and 265/75R16 tyres on deep-dish rims.
An abomination? Some will say so. But it was restored to be a usable classic, not a collector’s item. As far as we’re concerned, it’s an outstanding example of both.
The modified Td5 90 in this issue is an outstanding example of something else, which is how easily a Defender can get under your skin. Its owner only bought it to carry him mountain bike around… but next thing he knew, it had turned into a self-propelled Terrafirma catalogue.
There’s news of Land Rover fans rallying round to help medics in Ukraine, too, as well as a revolutionary new way of cleaning rusty chassis and body parts without damaging them in the process. And we have an appreciation of the life of Tony Gilroy, ‘the man who saved Land Rover’ and the genius behind the creation of the Discovery. A hero indeed.

The Landy is 100 issues old this month. And to celebrate, we’ve taken a look back at the stories that were making the news when we first launched.

Sadly, our main headline was about the latest attempt by anti-vehicle haters to have Land Rovers banned from Britain’s green lanes. And the main headline this month, too? The same story, the same haters, the same lies, you name it.

Elsewhere, back in 2014 Land Rover had a simple message for its fans who were worried about what the new Defender was going to be like: tough. 
Design boss Gerry McGovern made a hard-hitting speech saying traditionalists might not like it, but they were going to have to lump it.

We told the story of the North Somerset Land Rover Club’s £1000 donation to the Green Lane Association’s fighting fund, too. And we dug up what must have been the cheapest ever Wolf – a 90 with a price tag of just £2500. There was, of course, a catch…

Other classic features revived from back in Issue 1 include a beautifully restored Series II with a modern twist going on beneath its bonnet and a bobtailed Range Rover built by a professional engineer who wanted to show the world how it should be done. And still in the mood to celebrate, we’ve taken a look back at the 110 the team at Arkonik built to mark a milestone of their own – whose interior is still perhaps the coolest we’ve ever seen in a Land Rover.

There’s plenty of current stuff in this month’s Landy as well, of course, from restos to rally reports. And most of all, this issue contains your FREE guide to the Great British Land Rover Show at Newark on 1 May – which, in the first full show season since 2019, is reason enough to celebrate on its own!

Back in the day, loads of people cut up Series Is to make off-road specials of one kind or another. The number of precious classics we lost this way is beyond imagination, but one thing is for sure: everybody who did it wishes they could undo it again.

Well, almost everybody. There’s a 1955 86” in this issue of The Landy with a Ford V6 engine, Series III gearbox, steering and axles, parabolic springs and fat mud-terrain tyres.

Ruined? You might consider it so, yes, depending on your view of what a classic Land Rover should be. But this one’s owner must have had a crystal ball – because next to it in his garage are all the original parts he took off back in the day, ready for when someone wants to turn it back into a matching-numbers original.

Where Series Is have gone, so might 90s and 110s one day. Or have they already? Most people seem to be turning them into blinged-up street machines now – but we’ve also got a feature on one that’s been modded the traditional way as a green lane weapon and general off-road toy. 
It’s good to know people like that still exist.

It’s also good to know that there are people out there who see a desert race for classic 4x4s as an opportunity to make the most of their Series trucks and early Range Rovers. There were a good many Solihull products entered in this year’s Dakar Classic, from several different nations – though none of them was Britain. See that as a challenge, y’all…

Our green lane guide in the Lake District is a challenge too, albeit a much more gentle one. Gentler and cheaper, too. Though everything’s cheap in comparison to the new Range Rover SV – care to take a guess at how much you can spend on one of these personalised luxury Landies? The answer is within this issue of The Landy… and as always, so too is a lot more besides!

The ‘rat’ look is very popular in some corners of car culture. Not so much when it comes to Land Rovers, though.
Perhaps that’s because so many Landies end up looking ratty by default that doing it on purpose would seem to be a bit contrary. But there’s a fine line between nastily ratty and beautifully patinated – and the Series IIA on the front cover of this month’s Landy is a perfect illustration of why you shouldn’t be too quick to restore the character out of an old truck. 
It has, as they say in the adverts, had all the hard work done. And now it looks just fabulously cool. Its owners use it mainly as a beach wagon, too. And what could be more car-culture than that?!

We’ve got the story of an expedition into the mountains of Africa to hang out with gorillas, too. Scary? A little. But not as scary as the pot holes, especially when you’re doing it in an L322 Rangey on 19” rims…

When is a Land Rover not a Land Rover? That’s the rather controversial question we’re asking in the new issue of The Landy.

If you look at the truck in question, you’ll see a Lightweight. One that’s been given the treatment in someone’s garage, for sure, but you’ll see a Lightweight.

The more you look, though, the more you’ll see that it’s a Frankenstein’s monster of bits from all over the place. Chassis from Japan. Axles from Germany. An ALRC scrutineer would have a fit.

But its character? That’s from Solihull, 100%. When is a Land Rover not a Land Rover? Not when a Land Rover is what it believes it is, that’s for sure…

Elsewhere in this issue, you’ll find a Suffix B Range Rover that’s waiting to be recommissioned – but might not be as far away as its dusty exterior suggests. And if you love originality in a Land Rover, the Series III you’ll find in these pages is an absolute winner. Tool roll? 
Check. Handbook? Check? Factory-fit MW/LW stereo? Yes, really…

There’s nothing like a bit of a back story to light a fire under a classic Land Rover. And the Wood and Pickett Rangey gracing the cover of this month’s issue of The Landy definitely qualifies.
Having previously been used as as a work truck by a road-laying crew, this precious old rarity has been brought back to its original condition thanks to a years-long restoration. And it was worth it, too. Because this is a Range Rover with real provenance, having once been the property of one of the most famous names in the history of pop music… Another classic in this issue is a pristine Series IIA that’s just finished being restored by Land Rover specialist AJD Off-Road. It’s still on its original chassis, drivetrain, axles, panels, the lot… so much so that when it came to details like sorting a hole that had been cut out of its front grille, the AJD team went to astonishing lengths to avoid having to sully it with replacement parts.
The 90 in this issue, on the other hand, is all about replacement parts – such as a BMW M57 diesel engine and 8-speed auto box. Its owner’s reasoning is that he’s made it future-proof – just in time for it to become tax exempt. Nice thinking.
Whether the brand new Velar Plug-In Hybrid we’ve tested in this issue will still be on the road for as long as that old 90 is a question we suspect you can guess the answer to. Even so, it’s a clear sign of where Land Rover’s future lies – and a pretty special vehicle in its own right, too.
But for special vehicles, allow us to point you to the recent auction at which a genuine Spectre 110 fetched more than the price of the average house. And that’s not even the special one. Elsewhere on the sale card was a 300 Tdi 90 with less than 700 (yes, seven hundred) miles on the clock. Care to guess how much it fetched? The new issue of The Landy has the answer!

The big story in The Landy this month is, of course, the new Range Rover. It's a technological masterpiece – and it's open to order now, priced from £94,000.
What would you buy with that money, given the choice of all the Land Rovers in the world? It's quite a thought. A nice everyday Defender, perhaps, plus a hardcore off-roader and maybe a tidy classic with a story worth telling?

The new Defender is just a pavement princess, right?
You hear plenty of people saying that, and yes a lot of people who buy one won’t use it properly. But we got our hands on a base-spec 90 recently, with simple coil springs and steel wheels – and we certainly did. There’s no better feeling than taking on your favourite green lanes with the sun shining and not a care in the world – and, as we discovered, the Defender makes it better than ever.
Talking of green lanes, this month’s Landy contains a step by step guide to an epic route in Mid Wales. Great landscapes, great driving – it’s one for the connoisseur.
If the old 90 is more your thing than the new model, we’ve got the story of a man who prepped one as an off-road toy and also had a Discovery which he… prepped as an off-road toy. Both at the same time. Well, you can never have too many toys.
Of course, as we all know, the 90 is the cool Defender and the 110 is the sensible one. Or is it? When you look at the surfer-chic 200 Tdi we’ve stumbled over this month, you might not be so sure.
Or maybe a Discovery 4 is more your thing? There’s no need for off-roading to be a thing that makes you suffer, after all, is there? 
Especially not on a month-long mission to cross the USA without ever touching tarmac; the tale of Expedition America is one that’s guaranteed to give you serious wanderlust…

What’s the best version of the new Defender? That’s a big question about a vehicle that can cost more than £100,000. But here’s the good news. We think we’ve found it – right at the bottom of the range.
Our first impressions of the Defender 90 Hard-Top are in the new issue of The Landy. It’s the closest the new model has got to being like the old one – and that makes it a very good thing.
The old Defender had a final fling a few years ago on the Shoals of Agulhas expedition. This was the last factory-backed overland mission before the classic Land Rover went out of production – there’s a look back at it in this issue, too.
Forward controls are a bit of a subculture in the Land Rover game. If you’re into them, you’ll almost certainly know about Fluffy – a Series IIB that was converted some years ago into a camper van with a touch of the zombie apocalypse wagon in the way she looks.
Fluffy has been off the road for a little while, but she’s still as big and bold as ever. Her owner recently put her up for sale, too – so what better time to take a look back at how he created her? You’ll find the story in the new issue of The Landy.
You’ll also find the tale of an old military 90 that was restored in secret as a birthday present for its builder’s dad. Better than socks, right?
We’ve also got a unique story this month about a Series IIA Pink Panther – not a real one, but a scale model recreated in such detail that the photos might well fool you. It’s an astonishing piece of work – and you’ll find it in all its glory in the new issue of The Landy!

We all love to see a beautifully restored Series I that’s been through the mill before getting brought back to its original condition. But the new issue of The Landy contains an article about something that’s arguably even more wonderful.

How many Series Is can there be left that have been on the road ever since they were built? Never restored, just used – and gaining a fabulous patina along the way. That’s the 1956 86” in our June – and it really does need to be seen to be believed.

At the opposite end of the scale, though also just as superb, we’ve had a first drive of the recently revised Discovery. The best vehicle to wear the badge since the original Tdi? Could be…

Ever seen a Series IIA with a Rolls-Royce paint finish? 
Probably not… but the star car in this month’s issue of The Landy is just that. Its owner took it to Gumtree 4x4 asking for a restoration like no other… and what she got was a Land Rover that exceeded even her own very high expectations.
Talking of high expectations, the Holland and Holland Range Rover remains the peak of Land Rover luxury and opulence. Actually, make that twin peaks, because there have been two of them – and with the P38 version still looking as magnificent as ever, maybe it’s not such a big deal that used examples of the L322 never seem to come up for sale.
Not that they’d be cheap even if they did – though the newly announced Defender Works V8 Trophy is more expensive still. This 25-off run of remanufactured 90s and 110s with a touch of Camel Trophy style starts at £195,000.
Yes, indeed…
We’ve got a road test of the plug-in hybrid Discovery Sport in this issue, too – as well as the story of a much-loved French laning event that’s been cancelled once again this year thanks to Covid – but which is set to come back with a bang in 2022. That’s on top of all the normal news, opinions, buyers’ info and Land Rovers for sale – and it’s completely free from all good Britpart dealers!

The Series III County Station Wagon was the original lifestyle Land Rover. You can decide for yourself whether this is a point in its favour or a blot on its copybook – but either way, it turned out to be a far more significant vehicle than anyone could have imagined back when it was new.

In the latest issue of The Landy, we’re featuring one of the very first CSWs to be built. It’s so early, in fact, that it was photographed for Land Rover’s sales brochure – before going on to be one of ten vehicles used in the press launch. You might say it’s got a lot to answer for – but either way, this is a real piece of Solihull history.

We’ve got a spectacularly restored 90 Tdi in this issue, too, as well as a 110 from the same era that’s been turned into something very special indeed. Running portal axles, agri tyres and hydraulic steering, it’s definitely not standard any more – yet it’s also a low-mileage original on a recently fitted galvanised chassis. That’s a whole lot of potential, we think you’ll agree…

There’s another 110 Tdi in The Landy this month, too, in the shape of Arkonik’s latest masterpiece. And on the subject of masterpieces, imagine driving an L322 Range Rover all the way to Khartoum then coming face to face with another one – whose owner asks if you can help him fix it.

We’ve got an expanded classifieds section this month, too, with more Land Rovers for sale than ever, as well as the usual bustling news and products pages. 

Featured this month is one of the most perfectly simple 90s you’ll ever see – refurbished with a minimum of intrusive mods but with a delightfully classic vibe that makes it special while keeping it absolutely true to what it is. Its owner bought it because it goes with the Olde English buildings in the town where he lives, which should tell you something about its style…

People tend not to do that with Lightweights, but then they tend not to do anything much with Lightweights any more apart from restore them back to their original condition then sell them for huge prices. So Josh Roberts’ is great to see, because he’s still using it as a daily driver and off-road plaything – and because he’s still doing it all on leaf springs.

At the other end of the scale, the Oxygen 110 is the latest magnificent creation from Arkonik. Complete with a show-stopping V8 engine and sumptuous Ruskin interior, it’s further proof of the world-class workmanship that goes into the company’s remanufactured Land Rovers.

And talking of world-class workmanship, we’ve been behind the wheel of the new Defender 90 for the first time this month. How did it live up to its £62,000 price tag…?  Check out the February issue of The Landy to find out!

There was a time when the obvious thing to do with a V8 90 would be to turn it into an off-road beast. These days, though, original factory V8s are rare and precious – so if you found one that someone had ragged, you'd immediately think about restoring it.
 
That's exactly what Luke Odgen did. But despite treating the 90 to a chassis-up rebuild, he didn't take it back to standard. Instead, he created a stunning street machine with real off-road cred – and a feature up top which you're unlikely ever to have seen before…

This year has left many people desperate for a holiday – and if you’re an aspiring overland traveller, it may well have left you wondering if the world will ever be the same again.

So imagine what it must be like for holiday companies that specialise in overland travel. Not nice. often in restoration stories. By and large, they're too new to need it.

But when Adam Lilley found a 110 that was mechanically excellent but 
cosmetically horrible, he knew exactly what to do. He breathed new life 
into the middle-aged farm hack – and a bit more besides. With a skifully 
carried off Heritage look, this is an eye-catching Landy – and with a 
totally original six-seat arrangement with three forward-facing rows of 
two, it a unique one too.

Also unique, but a lot less subtle, is the LS3-engined Range Rover 
Classic which recently emerged from the workshop  at Legacy Overland. 
The American company knows how to make old 4x4s more desirable than ever 
– and in the case of this rare late two-door, it's also one hell of a 
street sleeper.

Talking of Range Rovers, there aren't many unexplored places left in the 
world. But the north-south crossing of Africa had never been undertaken 
by an L322 before – until Raymond and Nereide Greaves turned up. The 
introductory part of their story is in this issue of The Landy.

We've also got an expanded products section, the latest news from the 
Land Rover scene, part of a workshop trilogy on changing a rear 
crossmember and the usual selection of rare and special Land Rovers for 
sale.

We’ve been waiting for what seems like forever to drive the new Defender. With the new issue of The Landy, that wait finally comes to an end.
You’ve read all sorts of reviews and first-drive impressions about it already, of course. And all of them, we don’t mind betting, have fallen into the same trap of comparing the new Defender to the old one. So we’ve done it differently. We pretended that the old Defender never existed and that instead, here was Land Rover creating a radical, hardcore alternative to all the SUVs it’s famous for.
See it like that, and the new Defender turns out to be a perfect replacement for a much loved Landy from the past. But which one…?
Also in this issue, we’ve an eye on the progress of a couple of project motors – a Disco 2 getting an off-road build and an old 90 being slowly refurbished on the driveway. We’ve got the final instalment of an expedition story that was cut short when lockdown swept over the world, and we’ve unearthed a hidden treasure from the off-road scene that could make a very, very nice project for someone.

This month’s issue of The Landy is graced by one of the most beautiful Land Rovers we have ever seen. 

That’s a bold claim to make, but Falcon Design Germany is a bold company – and its take on restoring a Series III has to be seen to be believed. The phrase ‘better than new’ is often used with little justification, but when you see the lengths these guys go to in remanufacturing old Landies into heirloom vehicles, you’ll agree that it’s totally appropriate in this case.

You’ll also find a very different kind of Land Rover in this month’s issue. The Discovery 1 has long since become a favourite with off-roaders, but a nice one can still make an excellent daily drive. So how about using a trayback with an 82” wheelbase as a daily drive? Turns out it can be done…

We’ve got the story of a Pyreneean adventure with a leading 4x4 tour operator, too, as well as a workshop project with a difference – removing the modifications from a Defender 90 in readiness for taking it back to standard.

In addition to the usual diet of news and product updates, we’re also bringing you the story of an extremely unusual 130 ambulance that was turned into an even more unusual motorhome – and looking back on the Green Lane Association’s first 25 years. When you’re restoring a tired Land Rover, it can be very tempting to spice it up with a few new flourishes of your own. All well and good if it’s not a rarity – but when Hereford 4x4 came upon a very early 90 that was mechanically original but needed a full resto, they knew better than to mess with it.

The result was a superbly presented Land Rover that’s all the more perfect by still having the correct steel wheels and bonnet-mounted spare – not to mention its original naturally aspirated 2.5 diesel. It’s a thing of beauty – and a fitting vehicle to grace the front cover of this month’s Landy!

Elsewhere, we’re looking at another kind of rare breed – G4 Challenge Freelanders. Our workshop feature, meanwhile, follows the story as a Discovery 2 gains a heavy-duty front bumper – and in the world of travel, we’ve got the latest from a couple whose expedition through Africa took an unexpected twist when Covid-19 came along.

In slightly less dramatic news, we’ve got the latest on Land Rover’s new plug-in hybrid Evoque and Discovery Sport, and a profile of an ex-military 90 that celebrated its arrival in civvy street with an impressive set of modernisations from Overland and Highway.

Talking of modernisations, over on the other side of the Pond we’ve got the story of a Range Rover Classic that started as a ‘bit of a dog’ and it made up from all sorts of bits – but brings them together into a package with a real pedigree.
