And here we are: the final week of the year 2015 is here. How has it been for you? I saw a very funny video on YouTube the other day: A little boy standing, very excited, at the top of a plastic slide, itching to get down as fast as possible. For some reason, he gets into a strange, fidgety movement on his way down, starts bouncing from one side to the other, and by the time he reaches the bottom, ends up hitting his head about six times. If this is how the last 12 months have been for you, you’ll be happy to see the back of this year disappearing in a blaze of fireworks. If your year was less painful, you’ll want your good luck to continue into 2016. And this is what we wish to all our readers.

We are de nitely being spoiled living in Dubai. We have the biggest mall, the tallest building, but also a few little things, which make our everyday life much easier: we can order pretty much anything for home delivery, we have our laundry delivered pressed and fresh right to our doorstep. It is easy to get used to those this lifestyle. The local gentry has their life made even easier with housekeepers, nannies and chauffeurs. But, what to do if the driver gets ill or simply has a day off? Where am I going with this you might ask? I took the new Rolls-Royce Ghost II for a test drive for a few days, so for the 36 hours I felt like a powerful man who gave his chauffeur a few days off. This “Motor Car” offers a hard to match comfort and ride quality. It is smaller than the Phantom, often referred to as a “baby Roller”, but this makes it a perfect car to drive and enjoy the front seat rather than usual place at the back. It became a very good companion, and each journey has been pure relaxation, in one of the quietest of cabins and surrounded with exquisite materials.

The world is changing, and it is changing very fast. You no longer can be certain that the building which yesterday was just a two storey construction site, will not be a few  oors higher when you will leave for work tomorrow. The evolution of our landscape never stops. It is, however, good to know that some things in life are constant and will never change. One of them is Bentley Motors. This company might have changed owners once or twice, but you can be sure that their cars will remain as luxurious as it is possible, and will always set benchmarks for other brands that aspire to reach a similar level of exclusivity.

We are being treated to fantastic displays of  reworks each night thanks to the Dubai Shopping Festival. There is, however, much more to it than just lighting up the night sky. This week ahead has been marked in the DSF’s calendar as a perfume festival. Dubai will once again attempt to put its name on the pages of the Guinness World Record book. This time, residents and visitors will be able to experience the biggest perfume sampling event in the world. Set to take place on January 26, it will feature samples worth of over AED 1 million. Something tells me it will be an event not to be missed. You can  nd all details on page 15 of this edition of Car & Style.

I have spent the last two years of my life in Dubai, I am must admit, this city keeps surprising me with its mas- sive and speedy development. The areas, which a few months ago were filled with hot, desert sand, are now welcoming new residents in luxury villas. It’s incredible how fast buildings are being constructed in this city of wonders. I missed construction of the Burj Khalifa, but I’m glad I can watch the progress of another Dubai landmark: The Dubai Canal. It is going to transform Downtown, becoming yet another icon and incredible achievement for the city. We all know that big achievements require sacrifice. The problem we are facing, especially last week, is traffic jams on our main stretch of motorway. However, we should perhaps look at this as our contribution to the newest landmark’s success.

If you have travelled the world, chances are that you have experienced a sale period somewhere. Social media channels and YouTube fill up each year with posts showing crazy, long queues and videos of screaming shoppers running into department stores to grab a bargain. In Dubai we do things differently, and we do like a little more of a sophisticated approach to shopping. January brings the next edition of the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF). There is no craziness in the Dubai Mall, and Mall of Emirates might be a little bit busier than usual, but we do stay calm and shop in a more relaxed way than it’s done in other parts of the world. Plus, DSF brings similar great bargains and adds great entertainment on top of it all. Check page 15 to see what’s planned this week.

Have you ever tried to make a New Year’s resolution? Let me guess what it was: to spend more time with your family; to improve your fitness level; to quit smoking; or to finally achieve the beach body you’ve always dreamt of? I don’t know what your experience is, but I’m personally always put off by these type of commitments, especially right at the beginning of the year. I wonder how many of you actually managed to achieve one of your resolutions from last year? As you’ve probably guessed by now, I usually fail. I am not spending more time with my family, nor have I a beach body, so I’d be interested to hear from those who have succeeded. Just a few days to wile away, and we will hope that good old Santa will  nd his way to the Middle East. Thankfully the nights are now much cooler, so the reindeers won’t sweat too much pulling their boss’ sleigh above the busy streets of Dubai. This city once more proved that it doesn’t fall short on festive spirit. The majority of shop windows are wonderfully dressed, and many businesses made a really big effort to mark the end of year revelries.
We are, however, trying not to focus too much on the food we plan on consuming this coming weekend, instead aiming to keep our heads busy with work. This week we have a very special Ford Mustang review for you.
The model we took for a spin had only four cylinders, but despite losing its iconic roar, it didn’t lose any of its muscle car charm, and even exceeds the performance of some of its siblings with sporty capabilities. Less is more these days, right?

Did you know, apparently some fashion models and public  gures use plastic surgeons every  ve years? Car manufacturers refresh their models almost every year, though some of them ask you to wait for 12 long years for a refresh. The Volvo XC90 is one of those examples. After taking it for a spin and snapping a few pictures, it’s safe to say this SUV was well worth the wait: beautiful modernist lines, upgraded technology, a brand new engine, and some extra luxury touches are just a few of the improvements we discovered. I must admit, this car is one of those cars which left me with a lingering, delectable aftertaste for a while.
Are you sick of images of ripped bodies sneaking into TV commercials and appearing on billboards? Have you ever looked at other guys with envy at your gym, that appear to be doing nothing other than perfecting their bodies, and seemingly not eating? Well, we have a surprise for you. Those six packs they’re wearing are made in the kitchen, not at the gym! Our wellness specialist shares his knowledge and advises us on how to get the perfect beach body, quickly.

I was walking down Al Wasl road the other night, and after a few blocks I noticed how wonderful evenings have become in this part of the world. A cool breeze was blowing gently amongst the colourful Boxpark blocks, crowds were flooding to enjoy alfresco meals, and kids were playing an oversized board game. I must admit, I have never paid too much attention to restaurants and stores over there, but I actually found a few real gems. One of them attracted me with its funky interior design, and a great combination of the street style and traditional Chinese graffiti decorating the walls. It also grabbed my attention by the quality of the dishes, food presentation creativity, with the crowning glory being the smiling  faces of staff. Turn to page 14 to find out more about this gem.

Last week also delivered bags of emotions right from the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, where the crème de la crème of racing drivers were competing in the last Formula 1 race of the season. While final standings in the season’s championship had been settled long before Abu Dhabi, and this race wasn’t promising to be very spectacular, Nico Rosberg proved us all wrong. Adrenaline was in the air. We have a day-by-day report for you, just in case if you missed the track action.

Digital domination is upon us 

The festive season countdown has started. Having a few friends who absolutely love Christmas, I am being bombarded with their festive posts on my social media channels. As much as I personally am not the biggest fan of this time of year in Europe, I must admit, I very much look forward to a few lazy days spent soaking up the slightly softer Middle Eastern sun on Dubai’s beaches, and enjoying cooler evenings catching up with friends in rooftop bars, which are, once more, full to their legal limits.  

However, despite my new festive wake-up alarm installed on my phone (this is as far as I will go), I’m still very much focused on our core subjects: cars and luxury lifestyle, to bring the same quality of editorial work, and your weekly portion of “cool” and “wow” to keep you updated on trends and recent news. 

Last week we took something really special for a spin on Dubai’s streets. Think of Volvo, and tell me what you see. You will probably picture a perfect family packing a few pieces of luggage into their estate car for a weekend trip through the lush, green, Swedish countryside. You are not alone, 80 per cent of the global population pictures Volvo as a perfect, safe family car. But what would happen if the motorsport specialists from Polestar got their speedy little hands on a Volvo? Well, the result of that kind of experiment, would be the Volvo V60 Polestar edition, which is not only rare, but also puts the brand right in the middle of the sporty German crowd. What a transformation.

I played a little silly game recently with a friend of mine while waiting for a meal in a restaurant. We were trying to count how many people were wearing a pair of jeans. It is not the best way of spending time (we should talk to each other really), but it inspired me to reach for denim’s history books. Have you ever wondered why it is actually called denim, and how it was discovered? Check out page 13 to find out.

The life of a lifestyle journalist in Dubai is not easy. Don’t get me wrong;
attending many glamorous functions, and product launches is exhaust-
ing... not! I do love my job, especially when something really special turns
up for a test drive. When the keys to a brand new Rolls-Royce Phantom
Coupe had been handed over me, I couldn’t stop looking at its sheer size. I
nearly called the RTA asking for help for getting through the Dubai’s traf c.
However, to my astonishment, I gained a certain respect amongst usually
quite unfriendly drivers. Suddenly, my way was clear, and I even noticed a
few instances of giving way. Is it because of the size of this cruise ship, or simply the splendour of this vehicle that made a few drivers forget about road rage? I did not  find the answer to this question, however, I truly enjoyed my few days with the Rollo.
Let’s put luxury and a monumental stance to one a side for a moment, and think back to our long term test car. The new Audi TT has been part of the Car & Style team for two weeks now and it keeps making us smile. This week you are able to get a little insight into its interior design, and a few changes, which definitely improved this vehicle. The new virtual cockpit is a real treat for all gadget enthusiasts.
We have selected a few interesting, new boys toys this week for you. From the innovative “time in words” clock, to the pacifier that connects to the smartphone giving real time temperature reading. We also found the world’s smallest Bluetooth earpiece, which is functional and simply beautiful thanks to its amazing design. Cars, hats and beards. What a week!

Two years of waiting for the Dubai International Motor Show saw its culmination last week, when we got to see most of the global brands, as well as small newcomers, and an amazing Emirati sportscar on display. Dubai has proved once more that it’s a great place to host such an international event, and of how important the Middle East is to the automotive industry. I have been left hugely impressed with the sheer amount of horsepower under one roof, and I’m already looking to the next show in two year’s time. Check page six of this issue for a few showstoppers, and also check out page four for a few picks of trending news from DIMS 2015 on social media.

Cars are indeed very exciting and a part of most men’s lifestyles, but we don’t want to leave you hanging without the usual portion of recent trends. This week, we are helping to pick the right Panama hat starting from an affordable price, to some of the most luxurious ones. 

Beards are a must have, and must try look this winter. You might think it’s as easy to grow one as just simply stopping shaving. However, this process requires a few necessary steps to take care of the facial hair, not to mention the skin underneath it. Check out our grooming page to find the right products to use, and a few pieces of advice on how to grow a lush and soft beard.

Last week we visited one of the most exclusive tanning salons in Dubai, and just when we thought nothing could surprise us anymore in this city, we found tanning products with 24 carat gold, and the “Rolls-Royce” of tanning beds. This was a visit that has changed our minds about using tanning salons forever.

Waiting games and city lights

I could not wait until this year’s, seemingly, very long summer finished. I have really missed sipping cocktails and enjoying shisha in the classy roof top establishments of Dubai, savouring sunsets, before watching the city lights slowly brighten the night sky. Well, I am happy to say that from now on, and for the next few months, we will be able to do just that, and we have a few tips on how to look good by picking the right accessories for such occasions. 

This week is also special for a different reason. The two-year wait for the Dubai International Motor Show is finally over. We have been bombarded with a number of press releases, leaked news about global and local product launches, as well as reports about automotive brands increasing their respective stand’s presence in terms of square metres, so this is definitely going to be one big petrol head feast. Roll on November 10. 

I am, however, pretty happy that the distraction of waiting games, and the tempting city lights, did not affect this week’s issue. We are still here in full force delivering the usual portion of recent fashion trends, cool grooming products, and even some hedonistic big boys toys too. 

For the automotive fans, we have the new Ford Ranger that is trying to convince us it is tough enough for the hot, and dry, Middle Eastern sands, as well as a new chiselled Audi TT, which has become part of our team for the next four weeks. 

We also decided to make our wellbeing expert, Ahmad, try something that for most of us is quite a foreign idea from men’s spa menus. A Moroccan bath is what was in store for him this week at the funky Jazz Spa in Dubai. Check out page 14 to find out what it is exactly, and how it can benefit your wellbeing.

Adrenaline, speed and passion…

I was dreaming about sportcars since I was a teenager. They actually looked much different then, and the modern track monsters are much more aggressive. The look might have slightly changed, but the DNA, and the spirit behind each fast machine stayed the same. They are designed to pump adrenaline to the driver’s veins, and keep us awake even without usual daily portion of caffeine. My teenage dreams came back with a full force since the day an invitation to try the new McLaren 570S landed on my desk. It has finally happened, and you can find out all about this vehicle in this issue. I still do not need a coffee to keep my awake, by the way. 

We also spoke to David Brown, an English businessman who turned his passion to sportscars into reality. His long awaited Speedback is manufactured by hand, and brings the best British traditions into one handsome retro package. We will be able to see this vehicle up close and personal at the upcoming Dubai International Motor Show, but the story behind it is truly inspirational. 

This is also the week when we have to say konnichiwa to our long term test car – the NX, which sadly has to be returned to a lovely Lexus team. Is it worth AED 160,000? You will have to read our last part of the review on page four to find out. 

As a proud resident of Dubai, you must admit that this city brings all possible comforts, including door to door delivery simply of anything you can buy. This city also brings travelling tailors, who are able to create a bespoke shirt for you. I can bet you didn’t think about that. We also checked out a few stores for the latest trends in fashion and brought a few interesting grooming products, which will help you complement your latest fashion items.

Smarten up with C&S

This week you will be able to read a little bit about fulfilling teenage dreams and almost becoming a James Bond for three days. We had a chance to drive one of the most exclusive Aston Martin models. The Vanquish Carbon White edition, which added a slight sinister take on the British flagship sports car. This is not just a car, but a piece of automotive art that will awaken the secret agent in anyone.

We also put our Lexus long term friend through its paces. We tried the 0-100 km/h sprint and took a few tight corners to see how the NX will behave on the curves. It has proven so far to be a very funky and comfortable vehicle. If you are into an urban lifestyle, then you should definitely give it a go. 

Do you remember our colleague Ahmed, who’s innocent bet with his flatmate turned into an eye opener and lifestyle changer? Well this was not all. Ahmad seems to be transforming into a truly self conscious man who now preaches our whole team about eating properly. Check out page 14 for some very important five-a-day advise. 

We also took a little trip to the shopping malls to pick a few interesting fashion items which will help you to smarten up your look. From the latest beach outfits trends to shoes that every man should have in his wardrobe. 

As this was also a GITEX week, we bring you the most important trends and technologies which will become reality in the very near future. We have a futuristic laser projection keyboard, massive USB battle ship and even a very interesting Batmobile replica.

First of all, I would like to say a big thank you for all your positive feedback. We have received a large number of encouraging comments, and we are extremely glad that you are enjoying our new men’s lifestyle sections as well as our trusted car reviews. We will definitely continue in this direction, and we hope to soon become the best magazine for the latest trends, and the hottest social spots right now.

Last week we went to the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi with Cadillac to test the most powerful “caddies” to date. The American brand introduced a new ATS and CTS models in a sporty V version in the region. Promising specs, racing helmets on and we had enough adrenaline pumping through our veins to forget about coffee for the whole day.

Japanese style and precision is what we thought about the new Lexus NX crossover’s interior. It is sporty, it is sophisticated and definitely a comfortable car, but it does have a few weak spots too. The NX has been with us for two weeks now, and we still hesitate if it is worth the asking price or not.

We also took a bet, which pushed us out of the bed at 5.25 a.m. to join the crazy sunrise boot camp in Dubai. Pushing a massive off-road monster at this time of the day might not sound very exciting to most of you, but we promise, it might change your life forever.
