remember even from about 10 years old informing my parents that I was travelling to Australia when I finished school. I was completely adamant, so I don’t think they were too surprised when at 19 I did exactly that. I think the surprise came when I never quite made it back to the UK, other than to complete uni. January is always a catch up month for me, a time to relax and unwind from all the end of year activities. As it happens though it was also a month of preparation, getting ready for everything February has to offer, and it has a lot.

Goodbye 2017 and hello 2018, Happy New Year everyone!
Whether you spent the festive season back in your home

resolutions as I simply break them after the first week or

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, so the song goes and I totally agree, I just love the festive season! It’s the smells, tastes, sounds and personal traditions and memories from my childhood that make the celebrations so special.

As we head into the cooler winter season there seems to be
so much more happening this month than I can remember! If
you’re a fan of Jennifer Lopez, Ed Sheeran, Take That, Andrew
Strong or Liam Gallagher then you’re in for a treat as they’re all
performing live this month at various venues across the city. If
that wasn’t enough to get you out and about there’s the story of
one of the world’s most iconic figures, Nelson Mandela, brought
to the stage in an original musical tribute, the Mandela Trilogy
at Dubai Opera. For art aficionados, the opening of one of the
world’s most anticipated cultural attractions, Louvre Abu Dhabi,
on 11 November is something we’re very excited about. Check

October, what a month for awareness and celebration - we
have World Mental Health Day on the 10th, World Arthritis
Day on the 12th with your very own Connector fully supporting
the Middle East event on the 13th at the Shangri-La Hotel
Dubai and of course Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Is it me or did the summer seem to last forever? With

I was really interested to read our article on eating
for brain power this month. The experts agree that a
healthy and well balanced diet is not only important
for our physical health, it is also vital for our mental
health. It made me wonder how many of us take
that into account when trialling all the weird and
wonderful “diets” we subject ourselves to with the aim
of getting thinner. Maybe we should be thinking as
much about eating for our mental health as for our
weight goals.

This month’s dates for your diary reads like a who’s who of big names. The legendary Sir Tom Jones, along with Enrique Iglesias and Mariah Carey, will hit the stage at Emirates Airlines 15th Anniversary Jazz Festival. While golfing pros Sergio Garcia and Henrik Stenson are chasing the big win at the Omega Desert Classic. Acing the courts at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships will be Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Angelique Kerber among others. Add to that the Dubai Food Festival, Julius Baer Gold Cup and Health and Fitness Fun Festival and it’s turning into a pretty busy month - and that’s not even the half of it.

Let’s hope this year is everything that we all wish for. Personally, I’m very excited, with CATS coming to town this month and Tom Jones, Mariah Carey and Enrique Iglesias in town for the Jazz Festival next month - it’s like all my favourite music at once! The weather is again perfect so now is the time to get the kids outside and make the most of it – check out our article on page 48 for possibly long forgotten inspirations.

My year always ends one month before anyone else’s! I already know where to take the kids to meet Santa and listen to some Christmas carols; which restaurants are hosting delicious festive dinners or New Year’s parties; where you can get a takeaway turkey dinner to have at home with the family, and which festive markets you can get some wonderful handmade gifts from. But don’t worry, I’m not keeping it to myself, it’s absolutely ALL in here!

To say there’s loads going on this month would

Speaking of opera this month, I had coffee with Christine
Belbelian, founder of the Emirates Opera Project, currently
the only opera group in the country. The group is made up
of a collective of voices from around the world, you can see
them in the upcoming Opera Delights in December.
I was really interested to read our article on ‘What your
face is telling you’. In the battle against bags, wrinkles and
acne it’s amazing how what you put in your body can actually
show on your face, and gives a whole new importance to
understanding our digestive health.
