Don't suffer with the sniffles - feel better with these at-home remedies
-
Autumn means crisp air, golden leaves and cosy jumpers. Eyes watering, nose streaming and voice sounding as croaky as a frog? Our expert remedies can help...
HEADACHE
Inflammation and pressure in the sinuses from mucus buildup can cause headaches. Nutritionist Cara Shaw*recommends using fresh or dried lavender to alleviate symptoms. ‘Steeped in hot water, it releases aromatic compounds that help relax tension headaches,’ says Cara. ‘Lean over the cup with a towel over your head and inhale.’ Magnesium can help, too. ‘It relaxes blood vessels and reduces headache frequency,’ says dietician Lola Biggs**. Eat nuts, wholegrain bread, dark green leafy vegetables or take a supplement. Try Together Health Magnesium (£7.49 for 30 capsules, togetherhealth.co.uk).
TICKLY COUGH
Drinking water can work wonders for tickly coughs. ‘It helps keep your throat moist and reduces the “tickle” sensation,’ says Lola. Honey can also coat your throat, reduce irritation and the urge to cough. At night, keep your head elevated. ‘It can prevent mucus from dripping down your throat and triggering that tickle.
