OpenAl is crafting features for ChatGPT that let teams edit documents together and chat within the app, positioning it as a direct competitor to Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.

OPENAI BUILDS A CHALLENGER TO WORKPLACE GIANTS

The tools, still under wraps, aim to turn ChatGPT into a hub where workers can draft reports, share notes, and message colleagues without switching apps. This move expands the platform beyond its chatbot roots, aiming to carve a space in the productivity software market dominated by Google and Microsoft.

The document editing feature allows multiple users to work ona single file, much like Google Docs or Microsoft Word's collaborative mode.

Users can type prompts to generate text, refine drafts, or summarize content, all powered by ChatGPT’s language model. The chat function integrates conversations alongside documents, letting teams discuss changes in real time, similar to Slack or Microsoft Teams. These additions build on Canvas, a ChatGPT tool for drafting documents and code, hinting at a broader suite in the works.

imageOpenAl’s push comes as businesses increasingly rely on integrated software for remote and hybrid work. With 3 million enterprise users already on ChatGPT, the company sees a chance to make its AI a central part of daily workflows. The features aim to streamline tasks, letting workers create, edit, and communicate in one place, challenging the established giants with a fresh, AI-driven approach.

A DELICATE DANCE WITH MICROSOFT

OpenAl’s move puts it in direct competition with Microsoft, which owns a 49% stake in OpenAl’s for-profit arm and has long been its biggest backer. Microsoft's Office 365, with tools like Word, Excel, and Teams, dominates business software, enhanced by its own AI assistant, Copilot. OpenAl’s new features mimic these, raising eyebrows as the two companies negotiate a restructuring of their partnership, with Microsoft seeking favorable terms to protect its investment.

EMPLOYEES ARE BRINGING THEIR OWN AI TOOLS TO WORK, LEAVING COMPANIES SCRAMBLING TO CATCH UP

From ChatGPT and Claude to MidJourney and GitHub Copilot, artificial intelligence tools are rapidly finding their way into offices, classrooms, and factories—often not through official company rollouts, but through employees adopting them on their own. The result is a growing divide between how workers are already using AI to do their jobs and how employers are struggling to regulate, secure, and integrate these tools into existing systems.
