APPLE CLASSIFIES ALL INTEL MAC MINIS AS VINTAGE OR OBSOLETE
AppleMagazine

Apple has designated all Intel-based Mac minis as either vintage or obsolete, signaling the end of an era for these compact desktops, the company announced in an updated support policy.

The 2018 Mac mini, the final Intel model, now joins earlier versions like the 2014 and older, reflecting Apple's complete shift to its custom Silicon chips. For longtime users, small business owners, and tech enthusiasts, this move underscores a pivotal transition in Apple's hardware strategy, reshaping the $80 billion personal computing market.
Vintage devices, unsold for over five years but less than seven, qualify for repairs only if parts are available, while obsolete models, discontinued for over seven years, receive no official hardware support. The 2018 model, lauded for its versatility, marks the last of Intel's footprint in the Mac mini lineup, which debuted in 2005. Apple's current M4 Mac mini, priced at $599, boasts superior efficiency, rendering Intel versions relics for niche applications or collectors.
This classification aligns with economic challenges, as supply chain costs rise, yet Apple's robust services revenue supports its Silicon push. The Mac mini’s evolution from Intel to M4 reflects a broader industry trend toward integrated architectures, leaving behind a legacy of Intel-based systems that powered creative and professional workflows for nearly two decades.

Apple's 2018 Mac mini, equipped with Intel's Coffee Lake processors, has entered vintage status, meaning repairs at Apple Stores or authorized service providers depend on dwindling parts availability, the company outlined in its support documentation. This model, starting at $799 with options for up to six cores and 64 gigabytes of RAM, was a favorite for its Thunderbolt 3 ports and user-upgradable memory, appealing to developers and media professionals.
