Prison riders to enjoy freedom of open road before a night of lock-in
Wells Journal
|May 08, 2025
TWO decommissioned prisons - Shepton Mallet and Shrewsbury - will serve as the start and finish points for a remarkable charity motorbike ride.
-
On Friday, June 6, Cruise4Crews will hit the road in support of YFW Blood Bikes.
‘The event is set to begin at 10am outside Shepton Mallet Prison, renowned as the world’s oldest and most haunted jail.
‘There, a team of motorcyclists will gather at the iconic gates, ready to set off on their cross-country journey. Before the ride begins, visitors and motorbike enthusiasts will have the chance to check out the impressive line-up of bikes - the perfect opportunity to admire the machines and chat with the riders.
Riding in groups of five, the bikers will make their way to the equally eerie and haunted Shrewsbury Prison. Keep an eye out - you might spot them en route, turning heads and raising awareness for the vital work of YFW Blood Bikes. But the ride is just one part of the adventure. Upon arrival at Shrewsbury, the riders will face a night behind bars, a chilling overnight stay in prison before departing the following morning.
‘They'll be released as long as they're on their best behaviour!

From Sudan to Wells – mayor shares his remarkable story
IS truth sometimes stranger than fiction? Quite possibly. Could you write it? A ten-year-old boy from the Sudan, speaking no English, arrives in London in 1981. Forty-four years later he becomes the 651st Right Worshipful Mayor of a beautiful, quintessential tiny English city in the rural south-west of England. True or false? Totally true. We are talking about Councillor Louis Agabani and, of course, we are talking about Wells, and we are at the November meeting of Wells Civic Society, where Louis told his story.
