TRIBUTES have been paid to a “much-loved” rugby player after human remains were found in a local village last week.
The remains were found in searches in the Roemead Road area of Gurney Slade late on the night of Wednesday, January 14.
Formal identification had yet to take place earlier this week but the remains are believed to be those of 40-year-old Craig Hurcombe, who was a missing man from Wiltshire.
Michael Bretton, 40 and of Armoury Road, Shaftesbury, Dorset, has been charged with murder and one count of stalking involving fear of violence against a woman.
He was remanded in custody ahead of an appearance at Bristol Crown Court.
Craig, who was a keen rugby player, was described by a friend as a “genuine nice guy” who would help anyone out if anyone needed.
Dan Smith, who worked with Craig around seven years ago, said they became friends and he was shocked to find out about his death.
Dan said: “Craig was a good lad. I can’t believe what I have found out today, such sad news.
“I worked with Craig about seven years ago or so. He always took time to talk to me and we exchanged numbers and became friends.
