Fears over compulsory job cuts at university

A £4.2M SAVINGS shortfall at Newcastle University has sparked further fears of compulsory job cuts, a union has said.

The University and College Union (UCU) Newcastle branch continues to call for the University to rule out compulsory redundancies. According to the UCU, despite three rounds of voluntary severance offers, the University’s targeted savings among staff is short by £4.2m.

Newcastle University has sought to cut its salary bill by £20m, the equivalent of around 300 jobs.
