TATA TO INVEST £4 BN EV BATTERY PLANT IN UK

The Tata Group has announced a major investment of 4 billion pounds (approximately Rs 42,500 crore) to establish a flagship battery factory in the UK. This gigafactory will be dedicated to producing batteries for Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) as well as other manufacturers. The decision to build the gigafactory in Bridgwater, Somerset, in southwest England, was chosen over a competing location in Spain.

The gigafactory is expected to have a capacity of 40 gigawatt-hours (GWh), making it one of the largest in Europe. Notably, this marks Tata Group’s first battery factory outside of India. The plant’s significance is being likened to Nissan’s arrival in the UK’s automotive industry during the 1980s. While the exact details of the subsidies provided by the UK government are undisclosed, it is speculated that the plant may have received hundreds of millions of pounds in subsidies.
