Being a football legend does not always guarantee getting a coaching job after hanging up the boots, and Thabo Nthethe is starting to realise this. Though he is considered a legend at both Bloemfontein Celtic and Mamelodi Sundowns, it has not been easy for Nthethe to get a coaching job in the PSL after parting ways with Motsepe

Foundation Championship club Casric Stars at the end of the promotional/relegation playoffs. Since leaving Casric, Nthethe has knocked on the doors of Siwelele FC and Sundowns in an effort to get a job in the development ranks, without any luck. He has since made a move to KZN to work in the ABC Motsepe League, while he waits for an opportunity in the Motsepe Foundation Championship or Betway Premiership. Soccer Laduma's Tshepang Mailwane spoke to the former Bafana Bafana defender to get insight into his move to KZN and what else he has been up to in an effort to make a living for him and his family.

Tshepang Mailwane: Hola Skipper, thanks for making time to have a chat. You left Casric Stars in the Motsepe Foundation Championship not so long ago, so where are you at the moment?

Thabo Nthethe: I am currently working in the ABC Motsepe League for a team called Njampela FC. I am with coach Tshepo Motsoeneng. It’s a team that’s based in KZN in Ulundi.

TM: When did you join the team?

TN: Last week. Coach Tshepo called me to come over and help the team. When he called, I was at home waiting for some other things to come together. I had been waiting for around two months, so I thought I should come over to KZN. At least the club would cover everything. So, I came last week.

TM: What do you mean by “cover everything”?

TN: By covering everything, I mean expenses. I did not come with my car. They had to hire a car, and they are covering my accommodation costs. I have everything, so that’s what I am referring to. So, I don’t lose much.

TM: Is this a long-term or short-term thing?

TN: It’s a short-term thing. It depends on the offer I can get elsewhere. Obviously, it has to be better than where I am at the moment. The chairman of this club said he does not mind, and Tshepo is the one who pushed for me to come here. He is the head coach, and I am working as his assistant.

Will Pirates also suffer similar Downs fate?

Now that Pirates have contributed 9 players to the national team, the same fate that befell Sundowns could visit the Soweto team at the end of the AFCON.

South Americans are very fragile

Last weekend we saw Orlando Pirates make history by becoming the first Carling Knockout champions to beat the All-Stars team, after both Magesi FC and Stellenbosch FC failed to do so in the previous two seasons. Pirates were forced to play without several of their regulars as they are in camp in preparation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou's charges beat coach Manqoba Mngqithi's team 2-0 to be crowned champions, for the second time in a week. Congratulations to Bucs as they close the year on a high note.
