Tatty potatoes and vanishing veg on menu

SUB-PAR potatoes and a shortage of veg may be on the menu for Christmas dinners. Experts say yields are low after drought then floods this year, including a dry spring and summer and extremely wet September.

This meant bigger crops of Mediterranean-style vegetables — such as tomatoes and aubergines — but low harvests of traditional winter veg including broccoli and cabbage.

George Shaw, food supply manager for a regional redistribution organisation, told FreshPlaza: “We are beginning to hit some challenges, such as shortages in brassicas, broccoli and cauliflowers.”
