SCOTLAND faces snow, ice and Arctic -10C (14F) temperatures through the weekend into Monday, as Met Office weather warnings were extended.

Swathes of Britain already boast a white, wintry appearance after parts of the nation woke to freezing temperatures, icy pavements and roads, and snow-covered hills.

Up to 40cm (15¾in) of snow fell across parts of Scotland yesterday, with amber warnings for snow in effect for the north east, the far north and the Shetlands.

They last until midday today, but a yellow warning for snow and ice covering the northern half of the country has been extended to midday on Monday.

It means millions will face treacherous conditions for the big return to work and school after the Christmas and Hogmanay holidays.
