Life after Martin is sweet now for Raskin with Rohl's backing

- BY ANDY NEWPORT

RUSSELL MARTIN clearly didn't like what he saw of Nico Raskin during his short stint in charge of Rangers.

He certainly didn't do much to hide his opinion of the little Belgian either.

It didn't take a degree in psychology to work out who he was referring to with his thinly-veiled swipe on the opening day of the league season after watching his lethargic side limp to a draw with Motherwell.

"We had two men on the pitch today that want to do what they want to do," raged the then Ibrox gaffer.

"When you want to just jog around and do what you want to do, there's a big problem. So some of them have to drop their ego."

When Raskin refused to change his ways, one of them had to go.

Martin assumed it would be Raskin who would be bundled out the exit after dropping him from his squad for the opening Old Firm game of the season.

It was rumoured he had even told the fans' favourite that he'd never play for the club again.

But that was a popularity contest Martin was never going to win and, just five weeks later, it was the former Southampton gaffer who was heading out of town with a police escort.

As for Raskin, slowly but surely he's rediscovering his best form under new boss Danny Rohl.
