'Town has tolerated traffic chaos for too long'

LITTLEBOROUGH ‘has tolerated traffic chaos for far too long’ according to Rochdale’s MP.

- BY GEORGE LYTHGOE Local Democracy Reporter

MP Paul Waugh believes utility companies have failed to properly coordinate roadworks, leading to lengthy traffic jams locally.

With temporary traffic lights installed in Hurstead, Littleborough and Hollingworth Lake, residents faced long delays and tailbacks last week.

‘The mesh of roadworks in the area conducted by Openreach and Electricity North West last week was the straw that broke the camel's back for Mr Waugh.

‘The roadworks caused more disruptions in an area already frustrated with heavy traffic.

Mr Waugh says he will be writing to utility firms asking them coordinate with each other over roadworks to avoid traffic disruption. He also stressed that new government laws should make it easier to fine companies that cause unnecessary delays.

‘The Rochdale MP said: “As a driver myself, I totally share the frustration and anger of many motorists in Littleborough for whom roadworks feel like a highway to hell.
