THERE was a look of the Irish about Liverpool's latest statement victory in the UEFA Youth League.

With Republic of Ireland under-21 international Trent Kone-Doherty scoring twice and Northern Ireland wing counterpart Kieran Morrison having a hand in all five goals, a young Reds side skippered by Trey Nyoni just about held on for a remarkable 5-4 success at Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday afternoon.

Having earlier followed a goalless home draw against Atletico Madrid with an impressive 2-0 win at Galatasaray, Rob Page's under-19 side are in a strong position at the halfway point of the opening stage to finish inside the top 22 and progress to the knockout stages.

And Page was impressed with both the performance and ongoing development of Morrison and Kone-Doherty.

“Kieran was outstanding,” said the coach. “They could not cope with him, they ended up doubling up against him.

“He rises to the occasion. You want your big players to turn up in big games. He fell into that category alongside others, such as Trey Nyoni in the middle of the park who shows his quality every time he plays for us and he has experience at a young age.”
