Hint at moves to back agreement despite farm fear

- BY CIARA O'LOUGHLIN

TAOISEACH Micheal Martin has signalled a shift in Ireland's position on the controversial Mercosur trade deal, saying a decision will be made "towards the end of the week".

This comes as the EU has made concessions to sway Italy to back the deal.

Ireland, France and Poland have all been strongly opposed to the deal citing serious concerns from farmers about market competition, price pressures and regulatory standards.

The proposed trade deal between the EU and Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay would create the world's biggest free-trade zone.

In December, Italy and France dashed hopes for a deal, as both countries said they were not ready to vote until farmers' fears were resolved.

France has also warned the deal could weaken European agricultural standards, especially in beef and poultry.

With a vote expected tomorrow, EU Ministers have made concessions with a hope of gaining support from hesitant countries.
