Officers cleared of wrongdoing in case of woman who died while in police custody

POLICE officers who detained a woman who died in custody have been cleared of any wrongdoing over her death.

Helen Williams spent 33 hours in Caernarfon Police Station and was due to be returned to prison, but ashe died in custody.

North Wales Police referred themselves to a watchdog as a matter of routine.

The watchdog - the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) - found “no evidence to indicate that police had contributed in any way to Ms Williams’ death”.

The IOPC also noted a jury at an inquest on Wednesday returned a verdict of a drug-related death.

An IOPC spokesman said its investigation has found that North Wales Police officers “acted in line with policies and procedures when treating a woman who died in custody”.

On its website the IOPC said Helen Williams was arrested at 10.20am on May 23, 2024, outside a property in Bangor, for a recall to prison.
