Myanmar's minute of silence for the dead

DEATHS in earthquake-hit Myanmar have risen to almost 3,000, as the country holds a week of national mourning.

And with 4,521 injured and 441 officially missing, the US Geological Survey warned a death toll over 10,000 is a strong possibility.

The South East Asian country held a minute's silence yesterday, and flags are flying at half-mast on official buildings "in sympathy for the loss of life and damages".

The chief of the ruling junta Min Aung Hlaing yesterday said there were 2,719 confirmed deaths from the 7.7-magnitude earthquake which struck on Friday.
