Desperate plea as bacteria and chemicals found in Windermere

- BY NADA FARHOUD Environment Editor

CLEAN IT UP

WORRYING levels of pollution have been discovered in England's biggest lake, with campaigners demanding urgent action to clean it up.

Windermere was found to have high levels of bacteria normally found in human faeces including E coli and intestinal enterococci indicating sewage pollution.

Simon Johnson, executive director of the Freshwater Biological Association, said of the beauty spot: “The evidence must lead to decisive action to improve water quality.
