'Lift US sanctions to enable Russia deal'

RUSSIA says it will commit to a Black Sea ceasefire with Ukraine in return for the lifting of US sanctions, it was revealed yesterday.

Moscow has agreed in principle to ensure safe navigation in the strategically important waters, but only "after conditions are met" on ending food trade bans.

Under the terms of the US-brokered deal, Russia and Ukraine would temporarily halt attacks in the Black Sea and on each other's energy facilities.

If implemented, the truce could represent major progress towards a wider cessation in hostilities and a breakthrough in attempts to end the three-year war.

US president Donald Trump sees the latest moves as a stepping stone towards full-scale peace talks to bring the conflict to an end.

Ukraine and Russia did not directly meet to thrash out the Black Sea deal.

US officials met separately with delegations from both countries in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Ukraine defence minister Rustem Umerov said his country had agreed to "ensure safe navigation, eliminate the use of force, and prevent the use of commercial vessels for military purposes in the Black Sea".
