BRITAIN is set to bake in hot temperatures this weekend, but if sitting in the sun is not your thing ITV is on hand with a mammoth broadcast on Saturday featuring 12 races on its main channel.

ITV set to serve up a Super Saturday of racing action

For context, on the Saturday of Royal Ascot last month, just six races from the Berkshire circuit were screened, while on Derby day at Epsom, only five races were shown.

To have, therefore, 12 on Saturday is a proper treat for racing fans and the action comes from Newmarket (six races), York (four) and Ascot (two), but Super Saturday - as it is known in the industry - was not always the case.

Newmarket's meeting was a Tuesday-to-Thursday affair until it was moved a day back in 2005 and then, six years later, it went to Thursday to Saturday, muscling in on the existing fixtures at York, where the bill is headlined by the historic John Smith's Cup, and Ascot, a venue that rarely plays second fiddle to anywhere even if it is the third attraction on Saturday.
