How Dorothy's 1933 Derby gamble failed to pay off

BALLYDOYLE'S Derby favourites Delacroix and The Lion In Winter flip-flopped in the betting last week, and there is time for yet more shenanigans in the markets.
Three-year-olds are still maturing and can change greatly in a short period. The market could be a guide to late developers. However, it wasn’t in the 1933 Derby, when a horse offered at 250/1 five days before the race was returned at 10/1.
The beast in question was owned by Dorothy Paget, who inherited a vast fortune in her youth and took to racehorse ownership and betting in a big way. Golden Miller, the winner of five Cheltenham Gold Cups and a Grand National, was her best horse but she also had runners on the flat. In 1931 she paid 6,600 guineas for a yearling bred to win a Derby. For some reason she named it Tuppence. It was a bad omen. Tuppence was useless. His record was 0-8 prior to the Derby.
Nevertheless, Miss Paget thought there was nothing to lose by letting him take his chance.
