Shopping for salt isn't quite what it used to be. With so many new options, how do you decide? Our guide can help you navigate the choices.

Feeling SALTY

Salt is a staple in our kitchens. But not all salt is created equal—and keep in mind that a diet high in sodium is linked to high blood pressure and heart disease. Over 70 percent of the salt in our diets comes from packaged foods; cooking at home is a great way to control your intake. We sort through the various salts to help you make choices for your meals—and your well-being.

1 Iodized Salt

This is the fine white salt in a typical saltshaker. It comes from underground mines and has been fortified with iodine since the 1920s to help stave off thyroid deficiency. Since it dissolves easily and filters through a sifter, it's often the choice for bakers.

2 Flaky Salt
