Orban orders release of Kyiv funding report
BUDAPEST HUNGARY’s government will declassify a national security re-port that the populist prime min-ister says will prove his main political challenger received il-legal financing from Ukraine, a minister said on Thursday. Prime Minister Viktor Orban faces the biggest political chal-lenge of his career in next month’s elections, where he is trailing in most polls behind his center-right opponent, Péter Magyar and his Tisza party. As the April 12 vote approach-es, Orban — who maintains cordial relations with the Kremlin — has relied increas-ingly on an aggressive anti-Ukraine campaign that alleges Kyiv, the European Union and Tisza are part of a conspiracy to oust his government and in-stall one that makes decisions more favorable to Ukraine. Orban has repeatedly claimed Ukraine is financing Tisza, without providing evidence. In an interview with commercial broadcaster ATV last week, the nationalist leader said “signifi-cant” sums had been provided to Tisza by Ukraine for IT de-velopment and voter mobilisa-tion. Magyar denied the allega-tions. Orban said his claims were “not assumptions, but facts” seen in a national secu-rity committee report. AP
