With a very low cost of 23 USD per square foot, an interesting aspect of the design is that it has been entirely constructed by a local small time contractor. The architecture firm had to simultaneously train an entire civil construction workforce of 72 people to be able to execute larger & complex projects than they had ever done.

Sundeep Kumar

We all know that Cement is an essential ingredient of any building, but did you know you can now use the material to even decorate your home? Thanks to visionaries like Mr Sundeep Kumar, CEO, Craft Béton, Dalmia Bharat Group, cement no more just remains a boring, dull and grey material; it has evolved into a material that helps in creating beautiful pieces of functional art.Cement is a very versatile product with one of most wonderful properties-you can bind it with almost any product, hence the word ‘cementing.’ It’s actually a type of glue - a binding agent. Interestingly, the minute you mix it with other things; you can make use of its properties in a varied way. Such deep understanding of the properties of the material, enabled Mr Kumar to innovatively ideate products which can make cement appear ‘appealing.’ It’s a highly interesting journey to explore, and as Mr Kumar unveils the details through his interaction with the #SurfacesReporter team, we could not help but be in awe!

Ashish Bhasin - Director, Marmo Solutions

It's not every day that you come across a leader who despite all odds, shines through and accomplish extraordinary results. As the #SurfacesReporter team engages into a heart-warming conversation with Mr Ashish Bhasin, Director, Marmo Solutions, we are fascinated to discover the courageous journey of this man, who didn't even get the opportunity to get a formal education. With the passion to create a mark, Mr Bhasin left the comforts of his home in Gwalior and came to Delhi at a young age of 12. Interestingly, he had only Rs 180 in his pocket that time. Not much welcomed by relatives staying in Delhi, Mr Bhasin chose to stay at the railway station in the initial days. To meet the basic needs, he worked at a cycle puncture shop and even as a labourer in a factory. Things looked up when a friend from a construction company, provided him a job opportunity within his firm. Gaining expertise in the construction segment thereon, the he went on to establish his own firm, Marmo Solutions. The journey from Rs 180 to Rs 1,80,000 to several Crores is definitely a highly inspiring one. Read on!

It Is Time To Use ACP Innovatively

Aluminium Composite Panels (ACPs) are changing the face of the building industry. The panels which are a ‘sandwich’ of a two aluminium sheets securing a plastic core, are known to retain their shape even in extreme climatic situations. These sheets are corrosion/stain/fire proof and save a lot of time, energy and money. India is not new to using ACP, however, it is time to use it innovatively.

10 Building Materials Made Out Of Waste

The world has been producing colossal waste of different forms and types each year which are either dumped in huge landfills or blatantly land up in the oceans. The building industry contributes a massive amount to this humongous waste production. The 5 Rs - refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle, when implemented with intensity can put some restriction to the upsurging waste eruption. #SURFACESREPORTER in this issue takes a look at some of the materials and innovations happening across the world today which aim to relook at making waste materials work for us. Write to press@surfaces.in with your comments, suggestions, or for more information on such materials.

Working With The Intricate Geometry In Nature, Ensuring A Harmony In Design

As the world is slowly moving towards digital technology, both design freedom and efficiency has increased. But at the same time they are also getting more accelerated and complicated. Nonetheless design outcomes are evolving to be more efficient, more sustainable and more humane. It has allowed for design to become an interactive, generative and reactive process rather the one of evolution; often understood to have been closer to nature. Such tools transform complex issues into rational, simple decisions. Ar Abhinav Goyal is focused at creating designs and installations using computational form finding, optimisation and digital fabrication. His approach is to develop design in parametric /generative space, material studies, design analysis, cost optimisation and using digital fabrication technologies for manufacturing. His firm, FORMFORgE offers services ranging from architectural design, design computing, digital fabrication, product development and prototyping. His work is artistic yet more scientific, environmentally responsible and humanly more interactive. To know more about the architect and his unique work, #SurfacesReporter team engaged into an interesting conversation with him.

Surfaces Reporter In Conversation With Meraj Hasan Head-marketing, Welspun Flooring

With time, almost every category of building materials has gone through varied changes. Earlier walls used to be white or cream; then brands evolved, enabling the customers to customise the colours as per their requirements. Similar evolution happened in home furnishings as well. So, why not change the scenario with flooring? The flooring industry hasn’t changed much for the last 50 to 60 years. From mosaic to ceramic, what you see on the floor is largely grey, white & cream; and once it's done, it's done for ages. And the reason for this is the mess and time involved. Changing floors is considered a burdensome task. We want to completely change that scenario by introducing new kinds of flooring solutions. We call them ‘New Age Flooring’, shares Meraj Hasan, Head-Marketing, Welspun Flooring in an exclusive interaction with #SurfacesReporter.

Rising Star AR Amruta Daulatabadkar Aurangabad

Ar Amruta Daulatabadkar started her firm in April 2013. Her initial projects had less experimenting approach as she was mainly trying to get a foothold on the city. Later as opportunities poured in, with confidence, the firm started an experimental approach towards work, with material palette and spaces. Ar Daulatabadkar began use of local materials, experimentation with material, supporting local craftsmen, and creating architectural spaces with concept going hand in hand with context and importance to fetch in natural light. The young and energetic architect shares that she always makes efforts to ensure that the architectural work done by her firm is enough to complete a project, rather than just giving a lipstick treatment through varied materials to complete the interiors. The dynamic architect is steadily proving her mettle in the field, and accomplishments like winning the WADe India Excellence Award and Young Practice of the Year Award in WADe Asia 2018. Kudos to the young champion from #SurfacesReporter!
