An unfinished canvas, a lingering thought, and a play of shifting perspectives—it is this very idea of uncertainty that lies at the core of Sanjay Garg’s paradigm. The idea correlates with the vision of “imperfect” beauty, an aesthetic that is “unripe” or not fully realised, which tantalisingly describes the story behind the name of his label, Raw Mango. It depicts his journey from Rajasthan as he embraced the larger narrative of the nation. This journey is also inward-looking, as Garg, a “textile designer”, keeps turning to his hometown to engage with crafts at the grass-roots level. Yet, Garg is not to be bound within the narrow confines of a regional identity, as he urges, “It is important to recognise the value of handloom on a larger/ national scale and also regional.”
