On the freshwater front
Rohan Koegelenberg provides some tips on catching trout in winter. Ricky van Onselen continues on his quest for trophy carp on Rietvlei Dam using boilies and Andries Maree focuses on important aspects related to the type and composition of feed when it comes to freshwater angling. Rudolph Venter shows us the difference between smallscale and largescale yellowfish. You can also read about Eben Dowd’s fly fishing experience at Vrederus Dam and learn how to tie the Pink Sedge fly.
Rock and surf
Share Manie Combrinck’s amazement at the seven kayak fishermen who caught no less than 10 large king mackerel between them, the largest one weighing in at 30.8 kg! Other interesting reads include the rehabilitation of Lake St Lucia, turning it once again into a paradise for tourists and fishermen alike. Read about Renier Nortjé’s record duckbill ray and many other remarkable catches.
Competitions
The annual SA Shore Angling Championships delivered some exciting moments with more than 1 000 edible fish being caught. A highlight on the freshwater angling calendar is the Bloemhof Dam Bonanza. Despite the event almost being cancelled at the last minute due to rising water levels that saw the dam go from being less than 20% full in March to overflowing its banks a month later, the many barbel that were caught earned them the undisputed title of species of the day in both the bank and boat competitions.
