To Buddhists, Mihintale is particularly significant and sacred since it is where Buddhism was introduced to the Island. The full moon day in June, Poson Poya, is considered especially significant as it marks the anniversary of Thera Mahinda’s encounter with King Devanampiyatissa in Mihintale.
