Society is an amalgamation of Culture and Civilisation. Culture is connected to the inner or non-material aspect of a society, such as intrinsic values, beliefs, customs, modes of living, thinking, behaving, acting, art, literature, religion, dance, drama, music etc. Whereas, Civilisation is related to the external or material aspect, such as radio, television, telephone, mobile phone, computer etc. Culture and civilisation are inter-connected and reciprocal. Unlike civilisation, culture is continuous and cumulative, while civilisation is always advancing. The objects of civilisation i.e. artefacts, influence the objects of culture i.e. mentifacts and vice-versa. To quote MacIver and Page, “Civilisation is what we have, Culture is what we are.” If Civilisation is the Body, Culture is its Soul.
In this Second Issue, we celebrate two Indian Legends, The Legendary Urdu Poet - Firaq Gorakhpuri and The Musical Legend - Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj. Both of them have left an indelible mark on the society through their social and cultural contributions in the form of Poetry and Music. Music, Literature and Art are important pillars through which Indian Society and Culture is reflected. This year marks the 125th Birth Anniversary of ‘Firaq’ on 28th August 2021. ‘Pandit Jasraj’ who left for his heavenly abode in August 2020 would have completed 91 years on 28th January 2021. Year 2021 is hence remarkable; thus, Celebrating The Legends.
