Welcome to GW314 – our first issue of 2017. To kick off the New Year we have a great selection of projects for you to make, techniques for you to master, features to inspire you, and kit & tools recommendations to make you want to part with your Christmas cash! We also have an exclusive 2016 Wood Awards feature, which unveils all the winners across the 12 categories, as well as an inspirational project for you to make: Shaun Newman’s medieval fiddle. Aleksei Sebastiani shares the story of how he turned disaster into triumph during the making of his stunning dead-edge end table; Thomas de Bos shows you how to make a fun wooden aeroplane with a working propeller; Phil Davy makes an attractive symmetrically patterned table lamp, and Les Thorne turns a wonderful bowl inspired by the vivid colours of the cenote lakes in Mexico. In techniques, Peter Sefton’s Long Course students make veneered trays; John Bullar discusses traditional and powered techniques for producing mortise & tenon joints; and Peter Bishop looks at the various powered plane options available – both hand-held and static. In ‘People and Places’ as well as our fantastic six-page Wood Awards Centrefold special, we also find out more about Chris Tribe, who shares the story of how he made the transition from office worker to professional furniture maker, and most recently, a teacher of the craft. Andy King and Phil Davy both have a whole raft of kit and tool recommendations, including the clever iVAC Switch Box, Axminster’s Trade Series Precision Pro Lathe, and the Bosch GHO 26-82 D Professional planer, before Phil Davy looks at the Pinie scrub plane and the Stubai mitre square - a well-finished tool with spot-on accuracy.
