ELDERLY HOUSING CONFUSION

Q Our dad died five years ago and our mum has managed well on her own. I visit every week and last week she surprised me by telling me that she was considering moving into warden-controlled accommodation for peace of mind. I have no idea where to start with this. Will her GP be able to help?

A Your first port of call should be the Adult Social Care Team at your mum’s local council. They will carry out what is called a Care Act Needs Assessment to check whether she qualifies for supported housing. Down the line, if her practice has a specialised frailty nurse (most do), they will be able to help with supporting assessments and documentation.
