There's something about enjoying a biscuit fresh out of the oven and a good cup of coffee that feels like a small act of comfort — and at Ouma Bets Gebak, that feeling now has a permanent home.

Ouma Bets Gebak

After building a loyal following from her kitchen in 2024, founder Shineal Labuschagne has taken the bold step of opening the brand's first standalone shop in Hartbeespoort — a vibrant, pink-hued space filled with the smell of baked biscuits and the promise of something sweet.

Who is Ouma Bets?

Ouma Bets is my grandmother. She’s been in the catering and baking business her entire life, and was the breadwinner of the family. She inspired me so much with the way she lived her life — how she carried herself, never complained, and just kept on working. That resilience really shaped me growing up. I used to help her a lot in the bakery and at events she catered for, and I loved every minute of it. So when it came to naming my own business, I knew I wanted to call it Ouma Bets Gebak.

She's been through a lot lately; she recently lost her husband. But when she visits the shop, she gets emotional and tells me that she’s proud of what I’ve built.

FRIDAY ON MY MIND

We know it’s Friday in this house because three things happen: The first is, a tiny aeroplane flies around the City Bowl, trailing a giant banner advertising Mavericks, the well-known local strip club ‘Glamorous Venue for Exotic Dance, Private Functions, Bachelor Parties and so much more...’ A friendly reminder to their punters that their next lap dance is due. The frequency seems to fall somewhere between teeth-flossing and mammograms. Good times, guys!
